DCI Feeder Lottery and Sibling Preference

I have a second grader at a DCI feeder and I
am not Worried about this . We still have a higher probability to attend DCI than what we will have if we were at our IB.

That will be cold comfort if you have a bad lottery number for 6th and don't get in anywhere else either.

We will move; however as of now I like to have as many options as possible.

+1 60 or 80% chance at DCI is a hell of a lot better then 0% chance at our IB because there is no way we are sending our DS to our IB

Why don’t the PP downer abive tell us what school their IB is and BTW if they are not in a DCI feeder, it’s going to be 0% chance of getting in.

Except it’s more likely 30-40% if you don’t have a sibling preference. Getting lottery results in the spring then needing to scramble to move is exactly what’s making me anxious.

Moving with a sixth grader to another school district is pretty disruptive.

Not sure how (according to you) this is worst for people in DCI feeder compared to people with bad middle School feeder that have Basis and Latin as their only options.

No it’s not 30-40% with sibling preference. I have no idea where you got those numbers.

DCI is on a real upward trajectory and getting better and better every year.

We visited and toured Latin and Basis and IMO DCI is so much better in terms of curriculum offerings. It blows both of the other schools away with facilities, sports, clubs, and extracurriculars. We are not interested in either over DCI.

Middle school seats are the most competitive in the city EOTP and every year that competition increases.

If you are EOTP and in a DCI feeder, you have the HIGHEST chance of getting into a good middle school and that is DCI.

Everyone else, which is basically families in the dozens and dozens of elementary schools EOTP are basically going to have to either go to a very poorly performing, crappy middle school or move out of the city.

A few non-DCI feeder families might get spots at Latin and Basis in 5th but your chance of that is much, much lower than getting into DCI as a feeder.

The PP says without sibling preference. If there are 70 seats for 100 kids, like at MV, and half go to siblings, then the remaining non-siblings have a 40% chance. And upcoming classes are bigger (so far at least).

Sorry, I meant half are siblings, so 50/100.

What an incredibly silly statement. You were able to assess the relative strength of the curricula...because you visited and toured?

As it should. The appeal of DCI is a better option than what you'd have otherwise. A rushed expansion wouldn't serve anyone.

Except the people who would otherwise not be served, because they would be shut out in the lottery.

What's the point of being served by a school that is no longer better than your neighborhood option because it is under staffed and overly chaotic? I 100% get the concern of families with younger kids but don't think that a rushed expansion is the answer.

I have a very hard time seeing it be worse than my IB. For my kid, at least, I think it would be better even if understaffed and chaotic.

DCI is already understaffed and overly chaotic (or at least that's been my kid's middle school experience).

But I think Latin and Basis have their own issues too, so it's actually very hard to compare. Honestly, if you want to maximize your own kid's chances, apply to Latin for 5th (and Basis only if you think your kid can handle it).

Depending on your particular kid, they may get more out of either one of these three schools, but you probably won't get access to all of them, so that's moot.
