My kid is interested in a very niche major, and the subreddit was very helpful with regards to required qualifications, job searching, etc., as well as some discussions between professionals that helped illustrate the realities of doing the actual job.

Yes, it was a bit daunting, too, because there's a lot of competition for the few jobs available, and the requirements are very specific. But I think it helped to give a dose of reality, so she could start expanding her college plans to provide for some alternate career options as well.

I find it good for niche things that kids / teens aren't into. It is also really helpful when you have a problem that requires some specialization / expertise. There are mechanics, plumbers, architects, Apple product experts etc on specialized subs that have saved me a ton of stress and money. However many of the popular subs or anything trendy or of interest to the 25 and under crowd is a cesspool.

If the college boards are parents, they could be useful - it they are filled with the teens - then back out quickly!

I was once 'arguing' (debating?) something on reddit who was acting very immature and rude. After a quick history search I realized the person on the other side was 13! It made everything make sense!

If you’re following AITA, askreddit, or amiugly, or anything political, then sure. But groups focused on things like cooking, gardening, science, nature, or your favorite show, well, this discussions can be very civil and in the case of medical diagnoses, very supportive.

Disagree. I’ve used Reddit for over a decade (unfortunately). It really does not matter where you go. You can do something as innocuous as discuss your favorite restaurant and have people belittling you in your replies. It is uniquely argumentative place; the karma system, which chooses what posts to display based on popularity and awards each user a tally of their total points, feeds into this.

I don't post...I just search for things and read.

Find it helpful esp for college admissions

You would be shocked and disappointed to know how many grown adults who are parents have M.O.s about the colleges which rejected their kids, and post accordingly.

Reddit ApplyingtoCollege (a2c) and College Confidential are both much more reliable than DCUM in terms of delivering credible information. Here the incels and edgelords have the run of the place. Basically turning more and more into some kind of faux dark web every day.

And on Reddit, it's much harder to sock-puppet than here and bad posts can be down-voted.

I like a2c because the people, while nameless, are not really anonymous. I can see what else they post and where else they post. Unlike this place, I’ve grown to know and trust (or disregard) some users

The only really thing I really dislike about A2C subreddit is that a very large amount of threads of international students that are applying to colleges and needing almost a full amount of aid.

That cohort, in general, has to have very high admission standards to get that, they mostly apply to high demand STEM majors and generally get destroyed and not getting into many schools beyond safeties that they can't afford to go to.

I really this forum is a more accurate description of what the process and difficulty of applying to colleges is for domestic DC area students.

I like Reddit for intel on specific colleges. So for instance on UMich I quickly learned that the intro math classes are lousy and to take these classes elsewhere. But honors and advanced math can be quite good.

Hard disagree. Reddit is great and full of useful and interesting info. Every sub is different so I mean don’t join r/incels4life and expect sanity but the subs I follow are a lot less toxic and negative than dcum.

+1 - I too find reddit useful. The subs that I follow are generally mostly civil. I stay away from the drama subs. There are a-holes everywhere but seems to me that DCUM is far more a-holey. Take the A2C sub with a lot of grains of salt since it is mostly kids posting but once you get familiar with it you can kinda sort the wheat from the chaff
