Tree removal recommendation

JL Tree Service. Can’t get a better company. Were in Fairfax County and they brought down multiple large old trees that were sick (confirmed with arborist prior). Crane, stumps ground, and then the debris from the grinding was removed too. Will 100% use them again.

We have a company coming to do exactly this tomorrow - they are coming to take down the tree tomorrow, then will come back to grind the stump and roots another day (after Miss Utility has come and marked the utility lines). They will not grind roots within 2-3 feet of utility lines, but said they will do their best to get the rest and what is remaining will likely die (or can be dug out but they won't do that).

We used JL tree removal a while ago and they were quite good. Maybe call for a quote?

OP, just a word of advice. We've had several large tress removed over the past 20 years due to storm damage and dying/rotting... on three separate such occasions we had to call them back out because they said they grind the stumps down like 8-10 inches but each time they didn't go deep enough. It's a big deal if you plan to cover the spot with topsoil and sod grass. So when you get quotes be sure to ask how far down they will grind the stump and then make sure they do that before leaving. If not you could be waiting weeks/month to get them to return - and only after nagging them. Just our experience with 3 different companies. And yeah, the stump grinding part of the cost isn't crazy. Most trees we've had to remove cost around $2,500 + $500 for stump grinding. Though if they need a crane to reach the tree you are likely looking at closer to $5,000 (sometime even more)

OP - we called Davey, Green Vista, and Pin Oak and ended up going with Pin Oak (we liked them and Green Vista the best, Davey's arborist just seemed like a salesman and their prices were the highest). Very reasonably priced, really nice and knowledgable owner and crew, they worked very fast, and even did a few things we hadn't asked them to do. We were happy with them.

Op here- my partner called JL by happenstance and we were blown away by the knowledge this guy had of all the trees and bushes in our yard. He wasnt pushy and trying to cut every tree down and in fact the tree I had questions about, he said please to not do anything to it because it would do more harm to cut than good. He gave us other recommendations for the other existing trees. We learned so much today!
