Was Mr. Big Upper Class or New Money?

There are gradations...lol good lord. If there's any group of people more insufferable than aristocratic types it's the people who like to seem cool by trying to portray some knowledge of them like groupies.

DP. The PP simply met that you don't have to be either "old money aristocrat" or "new money finance bro who pulled himself up by his bootstraps." It's not that difficult to understand.

I think Big came from wealth but not "old money", and he's a striver-- and I'd also put Charlotte in that category.

I also don't think Big's mother seemed that patrician. She looks how any WASPy lady with some money would dress for church.

Did it ever occur to you that now that DCUM has expanded its reach that some of us are those people, and not groupies? Get over yourself.

Why would you say Charlotte was a striver?

No one upper class would have a butler as unprofessional as you to submit comments for them.

I recently rewatched the pilot and in his first scene Samantha told Carrie he was the new Donald Trump, so I'm not thinking same as Trump, wealthy family but millionaire to billionaire type.

The mom kind of resembles Mrs. Trump in a hat.

I would hate to think they modeled Big after DJT, kind of makes me nauseous.

This was already covered on DCUM years ago. Big had family money and was not new money. I don't know that the show ever said how far back in his family the money went, but the episode with his mother at church was clearly the show portraying him and his family as old money, not new money.

Maybe Trump was an inspiration for Big's character, but the show didn't portray him as a fame-chasing playboy who hung out with celebrities.

The guys who made it big in the 80s were the middle class guys who were smart, hungry, lucky and weren't worried about making enemies, then polished up once they had made it. Big's mom in that scene totally seemed like a woman who came from nothing and suddenly is rich due to her son, who had been rich long enough that the "airs" were much more ingrained.

Disagree that this is what the show was signaling in this episode. The choice of that church was deliberate to make them seem monied. If he was supposed to have been from more humble beginnings, they would have picked a different church in a different location, and the mother would have dressed and looked differently.

When you think about it, aside from this episode, the show did not reveal anything about his background. I think he was supposed to be somewhat of an enigma, which goes along with everyone calling him Big rather than his reveal name. It was effective, as I found myself intrigued by his character and wanting to know more about his background, but he was always just out of reach with minimal info revealed, just like he was to Carrie.

She was so fixated on having a guy with a certain amount of money. That definitely seems like a striver. If she had a lot of her won money I don’t think she would have negotiated her prenup the way she did either. A million dollars wouldn’t have mattered.
