Most old money doesn't have the drive to make it big in the finance world. They are generally lucky if they have enough, and someone who is a decent steward of the money. The guys who made it big in the 80s were the middle class guys who were smart, hungry, lucky and weren't worried about making enemies, then polished up once they had made it. Big's mom in that scene totally seemed like a woman who came from nothing and suddenly is rich due to her son, who had been rich long enough that the "airs" were much more ingrained.
Disagree that this is what the show was signaling in this episode. The choice of that church was deliberate to make them seem monied. If he was supposed to have been from more humble beginnings, they would have picked a different church in a different location, and the mother would have dressed and looked differently. When you think about it, aside from this episode, the show did not reveal anything about his background. I think he was supposed to be somewhat of an enigma, which goes along with everyone calling him Big rather than his reveal name. It was effective, as I found myself intrigued by his character and wanting to know more about his background, but he was always just out of reach with minimal info revealed, just like he was to Carrie.
