I lived in Richmond for years. I agree it's a good spot. Also for getting to Heathrow when you need to.

St Albans is very cute and convenient (although a pricey train ride). There is quite a bit to do in the town itself (Cathedral, Roman ruins, market days, shopping, nice restaurants, etc.). It's about 30 minutes to St Pancras.

Good point about pricy train rides. OP, you should get one of these, will save you a lot of money even if you only take a few train rides.
