| Yes, knowing that it's a reach either way. |
OP-- score was not 1270. Think T20 SLAC. 10-30 points below the published 25th percentile. Not sure exactly because some inconsistency between website and cds. |
| What does your school naviance show? |
| I would submit if, for example, the verbal score was pretty high and in range and the quant score was lower and kid is an english major. Or the reverse for a STEM major. |
To the first first question, yes non stem applicants do well on verbal. Second question, no, STEM applicants do not typically outperform on verbal. Pp doesn’t know what they’re taking about |
|
| Has anyone had an honest conversation with an admissions officer about how they see this sort of situation? There seem to be two variables. One, the desire to make the scores higher for the class. Two, a genuine desire to understand the capabilities of the applicant. |
Yes, that PP is an idiot. My non Stem kid got a 1540 first take! |
| I feel like we can’t answer without knowing the scores. |
| Why not just study a bit more, retake, and score higher? |
Say the bottom of range is 1420 and he got 1400 |
Well, that is the plan. But the question really is about what to do if you are just below the cusp of 25% at any school. |
I would look and see if you can find out over the past few years what percent submitted overall, and of those who were accepted what percent submitted. Some of the schools that have gone back to requiring tests have specifically noted that while they were test optional, the school accepted a much larger percentage of kids who submitted scores than not. |
| You are all treating the scores like they are more important than they are. If the score is 20 points below "acceptable" then make sure the rest of the application is better to compensate |

How does SAT score compare to HS peers? Are you a full pay family? Most likely sending his scores will only hurt.
Without students background and more information on the LAC it's hard to know. |
