Amazon counsel comp

My best friend was Harvard undergrad and law. Worked at Skadden and Blackrock. Amazon caused her to have a nervous breakdown.

How much does a director or senior director make in the legal department?

That was all in - they have a four year comp plan - over the first two years, 180ish base plus significant cash bonus (and a bit of stock); over next two years, base plus mainly stock. I didn’t get an offer, so not sure how negotiable that was!

Agreed it is about 350 all in, but can fluctuate based on YOE. Buddy of mine started at 380K (with 9YOE) and another around 330 (6 YOE) (this was during the height of hiring in 2022). Because comp in years 3 and 4 (and afterwards) is equity heavy, it is boom or bust. Lately due to stock appreciation, buddy who had the 380k offer is around 540k this year.

Also work life balance is heavily dependent on team. My friend works a steady 10-5:30, no weekends.

That’s not normal.

+1. Agreed. I’m happy for your friend and I’m sure she’s not alone but most people aren’t making $570K working 10-5:30, no weekends..

Directors and Senior Directors within legal are classified as Associate General Counsel (AGC), which is an executive level position. 99% of attorneys top out at Senior Corporate Counsel, as AGC requires a team large enough to have that level of scope and cross business function. Comp ranges from 700-1.1M, equity heavy.
