Finance planning for college education

We don't have an accountant.
We are in Virginia.

We have stock investments and the house is paid off. Also have some investments in fixed deposits since the interest rates aren't too bad these days. Our lifestyle is not lavish and we work hard. We are from tech background (since one of the PPs asked).
Although we save like how one should, what I am unsure about is how the stock markets would be by the time the kids are of age to go to college. Undergrad loan wont be our first choice and we have 2 kids who are kind of back to back. That's why I wanted to understand how people plan education related finances and how they pay fees. Our kids are smart overall (not so smart that they would get scholarship!) but very above average that we would want them to go to good schools. Based on my basic research, I found that we should be ready with $150K per child (including all 4 years) 10 years down the line for an in-state college. Is that info correct?

Great suggestions everyone!

We have a kid who starts college this fall.

We have enough in his 529 to cover his expenses for education and living through the masters degree he plans to get as long as he stays in state, which he is doing for undergrad school. He did receive some merit aid but not need based aid which has made this possible. We are assuming no aid/outside funding for the masters degree.

Also, don’t count on being able to access loans. We don’t qualify for federal aid based on our asset level and FAFSA is not working for us and people like us right now. If I needed any debt to pay in July, I’d be freaking out right now.

OP, I would plan on 170 or 180k for in state public ten years out.

OP here again. Can VA529 be used for out-of-state colleges or ivy schools?

There are no restrictions as to which college it's used at. Basically just has to be accredited.
