Frostburg or similar

OP Frostburg is a fine place.

The issue is with a 2.7 I would be concerned about any four year school.

Does he advocate for himself now?
Does he have accommodations? If so does he use them?
Does he attempt to do all the work?
Does his sport interfere with his grades or does that help organize his time?

Depending on how you answer these will give your the answer whether he can complete at a four year school.

Being that he is coming from a private I am sorry to say that 2.7 is like a 2.4 or below compared to public school kids. I worry that he needs too much help unless he is very good at asking for help.

I would also suggest getting on Frostburgs website with him and seeing the courses required for the majors he's interested in. One that might help him decide on a major and two it might help see if he's motivated enough for a four year school.

McDaniel is great for sports, but I don’t think they’ll take a 2.7/1100 (based on higher stat kid being rejected).

Frostburg is a good option.

I’m interested to hear that the grad rate for Frostburg might be because of transfers - that would be a different story than some of the other low grad rate schools we’ve looked at and worry me.

I graduated from Frostburg state. My son is applying for colleges and I won’t let him apply there. Yes it was a century ago that I attended and it’s a no for us. He has ADHD and has LDs.

Could you say why, PP? What schools is your son looking at?

How about Hood in Frederick? I know someone with an IEP (not sure exactly why) who got recruited to play baseball there.

I am concerned about whether he can handle college, too, but I think I should support him in trying. He won’t do any better living at home and going to CC - he doesn’t let us (or anyone) help him, really, so while we are moral support we don’t provide any organizational/reminders etc help. I am confident he’ll go to class and turn in his work.

Your belief that his 2.7 in private is equivalent to a 2.4 in public isn’t consistent with what I’ve seen/heard, but I’m sure you have reason for saying so. He isn’t good at asking for help and doesn’t get any help, essentially. Sometimes teens are really tough to help.

Anonymous wrote:Frostburg’s graduation rate is low because a lot of students transfer to College Park or UMBC. They have an interesting program for Mechanical Engineering where students stay all 4 years at Frostburg but earn a college park degree. The engineering/physics/chemistry facilities are really nice and students get a lot of personal attention.

Also agree with McDaniel as a suggestion.

We looked into this a few years ago for DS who wanted a smaller school and would not have gotten in to UMD for engineering. At that time almost no one completed the engineering program there. We passed on the acceptance.

+1 PP and I may know the same kid. Great experience so far.

High Point? If money is no object, it seems very supportive and focused on life skills.

I would actually think the team might be an important factor for keeping him motivated, as well as a built in friend group?

Totally agree. I'm sure baseball is a source of joy and pride.

Don’t most schools give athletes a lot of help with academics?

It’s a desolate, isolated, cold and depressing area with nothing nearby. It can snow from Oct-May and it’s a party school. Just my experience. I know others who have graduated from there.

Looking at Towson which is a Division 1 school, AU, Goucher, McDaniel….. my son is also not playing a sport.
