Will me miss our connection tomorrow?

Get it changed 100%. If it were in the same terminal I would say stick with it but not in this scenario. Don't forget the boarding closes 15 min prior to departure so that's only 30 mins.

I flew on American recently - at the gate next to us they had just finished the boarding and had started processing all the standbys when a big group of people ran up. I overheard them saying they had just come from a connecting flight. But it was 2 min over the cutoff time and the gate agents denied them. Even though the boarding doors were still open and they were still clearing all the standbys, the gate agents weren't budging - and it was the last flight of the evening. So the people had to literally stand there and watch their seats being given away to standbys.

All that to say - I wouldn't risk it.

Flights generally start boarding 45m prior and close 20 mins prior. So really, you only have 25m. Make sure you wear your running shoes!!

No, they definitely will not have the other plane wait for you. How would you feel if your flight from DC to Newark was delayed because they were waiting for a couple who had a tight connection? Not to mention the hit to on-time performance.

They probably won't even ask people to remain seated so you can get off first, but you can certainly mention it and ask if that's possible.

If everything goes perfectly, you should be fine. But if there's a bump in the road you definitely don't have any wiggle room.

I've had this happen for me, which is why I noted it. If they know a handful of people are running to the flight they can hold it a few minutes. I had a connection through hongkong that was slightly delayed getting there. We told the FAs and they made an announcement that several people had tight connections, please let them off first, they radioed the other plane to let them know we had landed and would be there shortly, and they had an airport liason meet us after we got off the plane and rushed us through security/tram. It was approx 15m of straight running but we made it.

Yeah that’s not happening with United at Newark.

They actually
Hold planes for late connections a lot. Happened on my most recent flight to st Thomas for spring break. Plane left 20min late and breathless middle aged couples were sprinting onto the plane as we waited. The flight attendants announced that we were waiting for a late connection.

LOL fair enough, it was definitely a more highly rated airline (cathay) so the service level could be drastically different. Still worth asking if they can't get an earlier flight.

They shouldn't be allowed to sell flights with connections under an hour, but they do. And they'll say it's your fault if you miss the second flight. Flight attendants sometimes make those announcements to let people with tight connections off first, and then everyone stands up and fills the aisle like they normally would. I don't think you'll make it, personally

I’ve seen this happen too, but in other countries, not the US. American carriers will not hold the plane for passengers.

They held a plane for almost half an hour in Dulles. United, last month. Assuming the connection was another United flight

United in fact has an entire system built for it. The most advanced of the US carriers in this area.

https://crankyflier.com/2019/06/20/a-more-detailed-look-at-uniteds-connectionsaver/

https://liveandletsfly.com/united-airlines-connectionsaver/

Not a guarantee, of course. But if you are 5 minutes late there are pretty good odds the system knows that and it will trigger a short hold for you

But yeah the C to A transfer is tough. They are probably going to have to build a train system behind security like DFW has at some point.

I’m surprised United would sell this itinerary. There’s a high chance you won’t make the connection, and your checked bags likely will not. You should notify the flight attendant and see if they will let you deplane first (sometimes they will ask passengers to stay seated unless they are on connecting flights XYZ). It’s possible they’ll hold the Aruba flight but it depends on a lot of factors (how many people need more time, how tight a turnaround time they have in Aruba, etc.).

It can really go either way - Its not wise to assume they will hold the other plane because that's not always the case. Airlines are all about their on time departure metrics and they may not be able to hold the plane as that can cause downstream delays. There's so many different factors - there could be another plane waiting to pull into that gate, they could be on a tight timeline by ATC to get rolling to make their takeoff slot, some airports even have curfews as to how late flights can arrive due to noise abatement. Don't risk it - usually you can get this changed with no charge.

it is less than that. Landing time is when the plane hits the tarmac. It takes a while to taxi to the gate, wait for the door to open and for people to get out of the plane. Then they board 20? 30? Minutes before the take off time listed. They probably have 20 minutes max.

Bolded is incorrect. Arrival time given by the airline is always arrival time at the gate. Sites like Flightaware will give you actual landing time as a separate datapoint, but also include gate arrival time. But always always always the airline scheduled departure and arrival times are gate departure and gate arrival, not takeoff and landing.

in 2022 our flight from Germany was delayed 2 hours because someone got sick on the plane. We were terrified of missing the Amtrak in Philadelphia, we rushed, we ubered, we bolted. The train ride was delayed an hour and it was all for nothing.
