Senior Skip day on Friday

I care. It means I have to write a new version of the test they’re taking Friday, because a significant number will be out. I can’t delay the test because it’s spring break next week, the following two days are work days, and I can’t test the next two blocks after that. If they don’t take it Friday, they have to wait 2.5 weeks to take it.

Those who are out for vacation prearranged taking it early—great! Those who skip won’t do that. They’ll come back from break panicky and begging for extra study materials, asking me to stay after to help them review, etc. They’ll turn in their review assignments late so it will take me longer to grade them. All things I would happily do if they were truly ill, but it’s a sh*t ton of work for me for a kid who just skipped for funsies. (But since mom called it in as a cold, I have to do it)

Sorry, you probably think I have a stick up my butt, but I spend hours planning and preparing plans and contingency plans, and stuff like this is just frustrating. I get it. 17/18 year olds make dumb choices, but it’s frustrating when parents sign off on these dumb choices and say it’s no big deal.

Why on earth are you having a test on the Friday before Spring Break? Ridiculous! Poor planning on your part.

Tests should be finished the week before so students have time for retakes.

Because that's how our units work out. I had a test on Friday in one of my classes and then a test this Th/F in another class. We can't test on O-days (like last Monday), we can't test the school two days after Spring Break, that really constrains us when we have 5-7 day units on Block Schedule (secondary math) and are running up against early May AP/SOL dates.

So are you counting the Friday test (the day before spring break) onto the 4th quarter then? Because it’s not fair for it to count on third quarter without the option of a retake before the end of the quarter. Or does your school used a rolling gradebook?

Original HS teacher with test on Friday. We use a rolling grade book. I told kids if they did well and it raised their grade, it would be included in their 3rd quarter grade. If it lowered it, I would not enter it until 4th quarter to allow time for retakes.

With block schedule, O days, AP tests starting the first week of May, testing days are limited. My options were to test the day before spring break and have 2 weeks of AP exam review, or to delay the test until we got back and only have a week of AP exam review. I actually put it to a vote with the kids and they overwhelmingly picked to do it before break so they could truly shut their brains down for vacation.

Agree 100%. Another teacher.

This is where the mandatory retakes should have an exception for unexcused absences. When no retakes, kids who had tests would go in for the test and stay rest of day or leave after test. They knew if did not go in for a zero on test— so some did still skip and skip test and get zero, but no extra work for teacher.

Technically they do—if the absence is unexcused I don’t have to offer a retake. But if mom or dad calls in and says “sore throat” because larla wants to skip, it’s now excused and I don’t have a leg to stand on.

That’s fair then. But it’s too bad the test couldn’t have been Wednesday of this week instead of Friday.

Our school doesn’t have a rolling gradebook this year.

I wish it could have been too! No one wants to give a test before break (then I have to grade it on my vacation!) but that’s how the calendar fell.

Do all the posts about lost learning when not physically in school during COVID or about too many teacher work days/holidays cancel out all these posts saying it’s negatively life-altering if kid can’t skip school?
Anonymous
Since when does senior skip day involve parents??? Kids should skills or not, but what a joke to have parents call in an excused absence. Own it and skip or just go to class.

Nominating you for teacher of year with how you approached this test- from how it applies if will bump the grade to having kids vote on timing and giving time to help prepare for AP test.

So spring break is 11 days. So much better to have the test day before break then when get back.

*skip or not- not skills, but is life skill to own up to own decisions v having mom call in cough cough sick when you’re not

Disgusting parents, no wonder all of your children are entitled little shits. Send them to school.

My DD went in and took a test on senior skip day last year, but then skipped the rest of the day. I think I may have called in with an excuse ("previously-planned appointment") for her to leave.

C'mon people! Why are y'all so uptight? Did you not do something similar when you were a senior?

Did it on own, took the unexcused and didn’t ask parents to lie. Never heard of parents calling in excuses for skip day until DCUM.

I never participated in senior skip day. It’s just stupid.

I agree it is better to give it before the break so it’s not hanging over their heads. No one will remember anything after the break. But yeah, all the kids who will miss it will have to do a retake anyway.
