UGA vs. Tulane for Business

PP. I mainly asked about the geography because you made some remarks about Georgia that made it seem not very interesting to you. But Atlanta is a very major corporate center. More significant than New Orleans.

Schools tend to have more influence in a geographic area around themselves. From what I've read on this board there seem to be a lot of ties between Tulane and DC. But to be honest, I've not encountered them. I guess I'm too much of a Northerner. I do hear lots about Atlanta. Northerners coming and going from there. So I'm a bit skeptical. Also Tulane seems insanely expensive. I'm on a scholarship committee for the high school PTA and one of the only times I've heard about Tulane in my real life was one senior girl headed there. She had the highest amount of unmet financial need of any applicant for the scholarship that I'd seen in six years. I assumed it was a family school because I saw no reason why to go into debt that much for the major she wanted.

I have some bias playing into my feelings about Atl due to some not-so-great experiences professionally as a female there so I’m trying to push that aside and evaluate objectively.

Certainly Atlanta offers tremendously more opportunity than NOLA, not just summer but also spring/fall internships, connections, clubs, etc. As a parent I want my student to be as self-sufficient as possible post-grad and the outcomes of Tulane business grads are a lot hazier than I’d like (Tulane only published limited data, and the last available year is 2020 that I can find). Anecdotally the students I know are doing well but a small handful isn’t representative enough for me.

My DC won’t need loans, tuition isn’t the #1 concern but UGA is SUBSTANTIALLY less than Tulane ($194k vs $353k) so of course it’s a consideration among all of the other variables.

PP again. I am a female MBA from northern schools & Top 20 MBA. Many of my classmates from the South ended up in Atlanta or Texas.

My career in the North in Fortune 500 has been mommy-tracked and my particular department has gotten to an 80/20 or worse gender skew in management through unconscious bias issues that are longstanding (mainly friendship networks made at work, not through drinking and golf). Finance and engineering actually have better ratios.

I am not sure what you faced in Atlanta but wanted to comment that gender issues in business happen elsewhere.

Yes, 1000% agreed, appreciate the comment. It's just one of those cognitive bias things I need to set aside as we make this decision.

UGA is a great school and Atlanta is the number one city in the US for job growth. One of my best friends son graduated from terry and is in Atlanta working in banking- six figure job offer and signing bonus out of school. Tulane is not the same or close for on campus recruiting.

UGA is 40-60% UMC kids from the Atlanta area and 20-40% people from other parts of Georgia. Tulane is mostly rich kids.

David Graves from admissions posted this on the UGA blog (the best, most refreshing and transparent college blog in the country IMO) two days ago, "Unfortunately, it was very competitive for out of state students, as we are limited by the state to only 20% out of state for enrollment." There was another comment where he said they aim to enroll 80% GA residents. Not sure about the makeup regarding Atlanta vs. other areas.

UGA is 80% GA per the blog. Where do you see the ATL stats?

If the cost difference matters, Ga. Otherwise, I think they are close enough in other regards to just let your child pick which they prefer.

One thing that hasn’t been mentioned is school size. Where would your DC prefer? UGA sounds like a great place but it’s big, I think you take buses to get around etc.very different type of school.

They said, your kid sounds very social and it might not make sense to pay that much more for Tulane. You can save the money for grad school or gift them a down payment.

The rankings seem all over the place. I would tend to defer to poets and quants but I’m no expert. I don’t think I’d focus on Tulane “dropping” in rankings. That’s just a function of the weird us news changing of the inputs in a way that really elevated large state flagships.

Also adding that I have a younger kid that wants to look at Tulane and one random thing I’m concerned about is the school being so vulnerable to hurricanes. They had to close for a month I think two years ago. And of course there was Katrina.

I don't think it's that random; it's definitely a valid concern. Tulane was closed for 2 weeks in 2021 for Hurricane Ida and was closed for 4 months due to Katrina.

I love NOLA and Tulane is a great school but I think UGA is the winner here, mostly because of $$, but also bc Athens seems like nice college town that is safer/has a lot less crime than N.O., and because at a larger school it seems there are more varied opportunities both academically and socially.
