This happened to my aunt. Normal mammogram and just a few months later, diagnosed with breast cancer.

I was surprised to learn that 20-30% of women have breast cancers missed by mammograms. I know it's a screening and not a diagnostic test, but that still seemed like a rather high number to me.

I think you’re just not accurately reporting something you read, but there is no way this is true.

I also have breast cancer. This is a hot topic in some of the breast cancer groups. A lot of women, when they’re diagnosed, want to know what they did to cause it. And I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a link to IVF. But I will tell you, as a young, healthy woman who breastfed, exercised, conceived naturally, doesn’t drink, doesn’t smoke, etc…. Sometimes it’s a crapshoot. My tumor was hormone negative (meaning hormones weren’t the problem in my case).

NP here - hi PP, I am in Bethesda and was just diagnosed with BC a few weeks ago. If you have any good local resources, FB groups, support groups, could you please share with me. I am hormone positive by the way, and tumors are in my left breast. Never smoked, took drugs, hardly ever drink etc, but did IVF and did get covid waxed multiple times.

Hi NP! I’m so sorry you’ve joined this “club.” I was never big on Reddit, but the r/breastcancer subreddit is full of wonderful, supportive people and I’ve gained a ton of knowledge from the group, and also found a lot of support there. I am also a member of a HER2 positive Facebook group, but it sounds like you are possibly HER2 negative and just hormone positive. Please stop by our subreddit if you ever need a virtual shoulder to cry on or have questions! I’ve already had a double mastectomy and am going through chemo now. Neither has been as tough as those first few weeks following diagnosis. I was so scared and mad and uttered WTF about 50x a day. It gets better. You’ve got this.

Highly doubtful. Her conception gave off one step away from one night stand vibes.

She froze her eggs, which required taking fertility meds (including hormones). So pretty much same thing involved in IVF. And it’s not IVF in itself that can cause it, it’s the hormones and meds.

I think I replied to the wrong post. I don’t know if she did IVF, but she’s spoken many times about freezing her eggs which involve many of the same meds and hormones as IVF. It’s not IVF that can cause cancer, it’s the meds and hormones. So if course, egg freezing is also a risk factor. If anyone freezes their eggs, they should probably get extra/more frequent screening for BC or other reproductive cancers.

My best friend was diagnosed with breast cancer when her baby was nine months old. No hormones to conceive, and she breast fed.

Was she older? There seems to be a correlation in women getting pregnant at an older age and cancers. Maybe something to do with hormone surge of pregnancy hormones in a time when the body should be shifting toward peri menopause? Or maybe the cancer is already there, but wouldn’t have been found for more years and pregnancy hormones exacerbate it and make it grow much faster.

I don’t really follow her or John Mulaney but I think it’s important for people with a platform to share their cancer diagnoses if it helps any other women with early detection. I’m glad she’s okay! How frightening.

I feel for her.
His divorce was messy though, with OM involved.

How do we define older?

I’m not sure about those stats, but mammograms don’t screen as well for younger still menstruating women with dense breast tissue. It’s still better than nothing, especially if you get one every year and the mammograms can be compared.

Not even one step away…definitely not IVF

The woman has cancer and is trying to raise awareness for other women and you people are trying to trash talk her? GTFOOH.

When you sleep with married men, you run the risk of people trash talking you.

Another reason why you should try to have children in your 20s. Never know what your health will be in your 30s and 40s.

I think the takeaway here is that if you have all the risk factors (birth after 30, familial history, etc.), it's best to do extra screening on top of the traditional mammogram. Ultrasound at least. Every time.
