DCPS last day of school?

Doesn't OSSE need to grant a request if there are fewer than 180 days? Why is this such a secret? Why is 180 optional?

Because everything is under mayoral control there is a single decision maker: Bowser.

Our (DCPS) school said the last day of school will not need to be changed.

Both of my kids' schools have said this too - unclear if they will get a notification from central office in a month or so that it's been changed, hope not!

Our principal's weekly email to the school parents last Friday at 5pm confirmed the June 17 end date.

Pretty weird that DCPS is not even abiding by its own calendar and policies. What's the point?

I'm wondering if the union raised a stink and threatened litigation over some sort of contractual ambiguity. Basically this is setting precedent that no snow day will ever be made up again in the future. If we have another Snowpocalyse, then your kid will just miss an entire week of school because basically the academic calendar is merely a suggestion.

Also not sure how you enforce truancy when the Central Office won't even enforce its own calendar and snow day policies. *facepalm*

This is a weird thing to be upset about? You really think adding those days to the end of the year will add productive, instructional time?

The union has no input over the calendar or whether DCPS decides to make up snow days. Why don’t you email the chancellor asking for an explanation?

DP, and while I’m happy to have them out on June 17—I have HS kids and so no concerns about childcare—I think DCPS has handled this poorly. Having a calendar that sets an expectation about how snow days will be treated, as well as long-standing policy requiring 180 instructional days, and then disregarding both of those things without explanation or announcement is poor form. Parents, particularly of young kids who need supervision, rely on that calendar to make summer camp/childcare plans.

Why waste time sending an email into the abyss of the Chancellor's office? I called Central Office early last week and they said they would call me back with an answer. Heard nothing until the principal's email on Friday.

Frankly, I want my kid to get 180 days of instruction. You might let your kids go screw off after the 17th, but my kid really appreciates the regularity of a class schedule. My kid actually does learn and is engaged. My kid also receives therapies from school.

I’ve emailed the chancellor a couple of times about he has always answered me - and not with a canned response. You should email and ask for an explanation if it really does affect you and your child. He is a public servant after all.

I am annoyed as I thought I'd have two snow makeup days when I wouldn't have to cobble together childcare. Sigh.

+1. If there were Snowpocalypse again, they would add days. That is why there is the option of added days in the calendar.

Even if your child likes the regularity of school, *nothing academic* will happen in that last week, whether it's 1 day of 4 days. Summer mindset will already be in place; school will have effectively ended (and physically ended for many families) on June 14.

Plan accordingly and quit wasting time on this issue.

There is never 180 days of instruction, 180 student days but not all 180 especially at the end of the year have ACTUAL instruction.

+1000

PP thinking there are 180 days of instruction made me laugh. And adding a day on June 18 will not add an instruction or academic endeavors.

This is what was shared with all principals last week:

Last Day of School
Given the additional instructional hours built into the school year calendar, DCPS will not have to extend the school year for SY 23-24 to accommodate snow closures. The last day of school for students will remain Monday, June 17 and the last day for teachers, a Records/PD Day will remain Tuesday, June 18.
