Tell me about Sidwell PE?

Depending on the skill level of the student - this is possible for some sports - less for others (basketball very unlikely, track has plenty of room for everyone)

Does anyone know about dance at sidwell? Is that an option for PE and if so are there options for a kid who hasn’t danced before?

Dance and yoga are offered as part of PE

I saw that, but I feel like there is a difference between schools that offer low key dance classes that meet a few times a week for kids who want to try something new, and dance teams or other serious dance extracurriculars. I have seen both and wasn’t sure if Sidwell has one or the other or both. My kid would be in the first category.

It's MUCH better than schools with a sports requirement.

At Sidwell you can take a PE class that meets 2x a week for 45 minutes after school. And there are daytime and before school conditioning options. Going this route means you will have 2 trimesters off over 4 years. (being on a 2 sports teams a year means you can end up with 4 trimesters off)

Other schools will require you be on a sports team, manage a team, be in the play - and the time commitment for that is usually 5 days a week for 2hrs each - plus the competitions/performances. GDS is the only comparable school that doesn't have a sports requirement. STA/NCS, Potomac, Maret, Holton, Landon, SAES, Bullis, GT Prep (and more) all have a sports team requirement.

Wow, this could be difficult for some students. What if you’re a conservatory level dancer or club gymnast? Those are huge outside athletic commitments of many hours year-round and it would be hard to participate in a team sport at school, virtually impossible really. Do these schools offer exemptions in those situations?

Potomac doesn’t have a sports team requirement. You are required to do something 2 out of the 3 seasons, and one thing needs to be sweaty. You can still fill that sweaty requirement by being in the musical, yoga, weights & conditioning, etc.

I answered above for Potomac but should have added that yes, you can get a waiver, particularly if its for something not offered or not offered at that level at school (kids we know waiver for horseback riding, skating, dance, etc). You can also fulfill your requirements by speech and debate (they incorporate mild exercise such as walks/runs if you’re using it as a sweaty sport), robotics, plays, etc.

These still take time and likely more than 45 min 2 times a week.

Your student would need to make their case to the Athletic Director for a potential waiver or workable solution. Many kids have transferred from Sidwell because of their out of school commitments.
