OP: I think you will still want your third row. I have a Hundai Santa Fe 3rd row and love it. It was 32K 10 years ago though. (It's more like 11 yrs old but still)

Rivian R3 has DEFINITELY piqued my interest.

Price tag should be below $45k. It is not grossly sized. It should get 300 miles in range. All around good enough for 95% of daily use even in cold weather.

This article might help you OP: https://jalopnik.com/i-want-an-electric-vehicle-that-can-fit-the-family-wha-1851297138

Similar question though they had a higher price ceiling. But many of the suggestions come within your price point, or may be available slightly used for your price point.

For the first time in decades, DH and I are not immediately defaulting to "ohmygodyes get ALL the rows and ALL the storage." DCUM car gurus and savvy shoppers, got any suggestions for me? We have a smaller around-town car. The totaled vehicle was our bigger one, with a third row. Do you think we still need that much firepower? What should I be looking at?

- One high schooler, one kid off to college in fall
- College is driving distance, but happy to rent a larger car for stuff-intensive dropoff/pickup
- Our sports are gear-intensive: stuff (and carpools) for high schooler's team sport, golf clubs, skis, etc.
- One of my parents is local, one of DH's parents flies in for visits. It's nice to put everybody in one car when we get together, but I'm willing to sit in the middle-back for short hops.
- I'd love to go all-electric, or electric hybrid
- Would like to keep total cost under $35k

Based on all of this. I would still want a 3 row vehicle. I'm keeping it until they are all through college or darn close.

I have 4 kids--older 3 are off to college and beyond, and one high schooler still at home. We got rid of our "big car" (minivan) three years ago when we still had two high schoolers. Now I drive a very small car and it's been fine. I don't miss having a big car at all.
Really, with just two kids you never needed a "big car" in the first place.

OP back again. We've test-driven hybrid versions of the Hyundai Tucson (liked it), the Toyota RAV4 (liked it), the Honda CRV (meh) and the Ford Escape. Having a hard time deciding between throwing a bunch of money at a newer model and/or one with lots of bells and whistles, and an older one that will get the job done but not excite or pamper anyone.

Also can't agree whether to throw EVs into the consideration mix. For those of you who have them, please talk to me about recharging on longer road trips. DH (an inveterate "I'm just gonna stop for another coffee" guy) is convinced this will be such a huge hassle, and I'm tired of trying to decipher his logic.
