Anyone change their mind and go back to public?

Yes but our kid is loud and assertive. I would keep a quieter kid in private as we did with our younger DS.

Social reasons are to me one of the top reasons between a good fit in public v Pvt. NOT academics. Actually I would suggest never academics. The only reasons to consider private have to do with how comfortable your kid would be with a ton of kids, having larger class sizes, the ability to self advocate and as a parent - how likely my kid would fall through the cracks as they say - either academically or socially. Having kids not in private until MS, I would assure you that there's no prob in public if you have a really well adjusted kid. But if they tend on the quieter side I would really want to ensure they are comfortable with the pros and cons of public. The other favor is learning disabilities. Unless your kid is "perfect" the private environment often will be a better fit in upper grades. Tutoring works great as long as the kid is well adjusted but depending on the schools, privates are typically better functioning for a weaker academically oriented kid. Let's face it - the stuff is usually more interesting when you're paying $50k for it to be!
