What are you reading for March?

I listen instead of read. So far this month I've listened to:
The Fake Out by Stephanie Archer
That Kind of Guy by Stephanie Archer

Plan to finish the Queen's Cove series this month.

Love me some spicy romance books!

New Tana French and Adele Waldmen. Andrew Botega’s Victim if I can get to it.

Just finished All the Light We Cannot See. It was fine. Not good, just fine. Lots of description and introspection, if that's your thing, but it really dragged. I struggled to care enough to finish it.

I loved the Beartown trilogy!

House in the Cerulean Sea has been on my list forever so you’ve convinced me to move it to the top of my list.

What is everyone reading this month?
The Heron's Cry by Ann Cleeves

What is it about?
This is the second book in a series by Cleeves featuring Matthew Venn, a police detective in North Devon, solving a murder.

What do you think of it?
So far I like it. I read the Shetland series by Cleeves, and I enjoy her writing. Shetland and Cleeves' Vera Stanhope series have been made into TV shows, and I think this series will be also.

Why did you pick that particular book to read?
Book one was on my want to read list but wasn't available so I broke down and started with book two.

How did you acquire the book?
audiobook via Libby

Oh I really enjoyed the Shetland series and didn’t know she had one set in Devon. I’m going to put this on my library list, thanks!

It is about yuppie parents in a fictionalizes Boulder, Colorado, freaking out about trying to get their 11 year olds into a new magnet school for gifted children.

I absolutely loved this book! Don’t know why I just got completely absorbed in it.

I am reading I have some questions for you by Rebecca Makkai.

It’s all right, but I’m not totally sucked in yet.

I’ve gotten quite into reading and reviewing ARCs the past couple of years. It’s really fun. Sometimes I get a gem that blows up 6 months later, and other times (more commonly) I find a gem that doesn’t have a huge publicity machine behind it, so I really try to recommend and promote it. There are soooo many good authors out there that don’t get nearly enough recognition!

And then other times… I’m like eh, this needs work, and then the book wins like every award and I’m completely puzzled.

I am so excited to hear that Helen Phillips has a new book! I loved “the need” and even read interviews with her about how she wrote it. It was such a good description of the horror and love of new parenthood. I’m adding this to my waitlist immediately.

I’m so jealous of people who get ARCs! As someone fascinated by publishing, I want them for that insight alone.

After eagerly awaiting my turn for “Happiness Falls,” my loan is going to expire before I finish. It’s tedious and I’m so uninvested I don’t care how it ends.

I just got “Cork Dork” based on strong reviews for the authors new book. High hopes!

I feel like there was a lot of hype about Happiness Falls. I found it incredibly unbelievable and the ending unsatisfying.

I just finished Demon Copperhead. Overall I liked the first half more than the second. I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

I’m not sure what I’m going to read next.

Sign up for NetGalley! It’s totally free and the more you read and review the ARCs, the bigger books you get! In the beginning, I got smaller or self published authors (many of whom were good!) but now that I’ve been doing it awhile/established a pattern of reviewing, I’m starting to get bigger named authors. Now I’m doing a mix of both and it’s really fun.

I just added “The Need” to my list! I just finished and really liked “Hum” though it’s too-real depiction of parenting in the nearish future/AI made me sort of anxious.

Oh yeah I didn’t like Happiness Falls. I did appreciate the amount of attention and research the author put into it to get the dynamics right about the family and the child’s special needs. But overall I found the main character/narrator annoying. I also hated the excessive foreshadowing and that every chapter ending with a weird “cliffhanger.”

The Senator's Wife by Liv Constantine (author of The Last Mrs. Parish) - it's okay so far. I'm about 60% in, and it's dragging in the middle a bit. Seems to be working up to big twists, and I hope I'm not left disappointed.
