If he changes his mind, both schools are strong enough in both areas that it shouldn’t make a difference.

Wisconsin is ranked 11th for economics with a very distinguished history. Indiana is in the 50s.

This is practically true for every program at Wisconsin vs Indiana. Rich people on here don't like that Wisconsin has good departments, while also having a lot of middle class students. So they resort to claiming the schools are the same.

What in the world are you talking about, lol? Do you actually think Indiana doesn’t have middle class students??

Wisconsin is a great school and strong in many areas. Indiana is also a very good school—not as highly ranked overall, but still stronger in some areas than Wisconsin. Both are big Midwestern universities in terrific college towns, with a lot of school spirit. It’s hard to go wrong either way. I would say the much same thing if we were talking about schools like Ohio State or Purdue.

Stronger than Wisconsin in literally one area of study (business, finance specifically). Yeah, just ignore the fact that most IU programs go unranked (like philosophy, mathematics, or chemistry) and just say it's equal to Wisconsin, who is Top 20 in everything. Just proving my point more.

Stronger or equivalent in areas like public affairs (#1), music, english literature, foreign language, cognitive psychology, library science, etc. and yes, stronger in pretty much every sub-area of business including finance, entrepreneurship, analytics, information systems, accounting, marketing, management, etc. The US News Global University Rankings for Economics and Business, which look specifically at the quality of research produced, put Indiana at 25th worldwide, while Wisconsin comes in at #104. So yes, Indiana's economics program is also more than capable.

But it's a bit unclear why you have a chip on your shoulder when almost every post in this thread has acknowledged that Wisconsin is higher-ranked overall.

Where are you drawing these rankings from IU Booster? I have a mission for you, just simply look up the US News economic rankings. UW Madison ranked 14th, while IU is ranked 40th. This holds across the board for most subjects.

IU Booster, US News Global is not a trusted site. They do not publish their methodology and are not considered reliable for global rankings. QS World, ARWU, and the Times Higher Education are the trustworthy sites for global rankings. All three have UW Madison higher than IU by hundreds of places, how it should be. That's because IU is an insignificant university, always has been always will be.

However, and this is a big however, the Harvard name will open doors everywhere in a way that most other college names can't. Also, the CS major from Harvard will have spent 4 years networking with other ambitious overachievers who will likely be in a position to help them professionally later in life.

As a hiring manager, I agree with the quoted text just above. I do not give Harvard CS grads any hiring or interviewing preference over VT or UMd or UVA or UMBC. Those Harvard grads really are not better qualified for any entry-level job I might have.

That said, the Harvard grad might well have a better professional network that lets them know about some startup with good potential and the personal connection needed to get an interview at said startup. IMHO, the Stanford CS grad likely has the best “startup” network and the UCB CS grad or SJSU CS grad the next best “startup” networks (since SillyValley still has more startups than anywhere else). Mind, it plays out this way mainly because STEM fields are very much about skills and capabilities, and much less about branding or marketing (“prestige”). With other (i.e., non-STEM) fields the particular university attended might factor quite differently at hiring time; I would not know about that either way.

US News & World Report ranking that doesn't support your position = no good

Sure thing, Wisconsin Booster!

These rankings are equally if not even more useless, Wisconsin booster. It is clear you do not understand the methodology used in these meaningless global rankings. Wisconsin and Indiana are interchangeable. No need to stress over which one to attend.

Most department are ranked better at Wisconsin. This fact is seemingly ignored by both users on this thread. Anyone claiming IU is better than Econ is lying; ask any tenured professor or just looked at the faculty: Wisconsin got some pretty big names.
