Oakridge Teacher Breakdowns

There is often a cohort of students that consistently demonstrate behavioral issues and cause classroom disruptions. The schools (including Oakridge) will often not discipline or remove these students, instead choosing a "restorative justice" type of approach, which does nothing. The teachers and other students continue to have to deal with the disruptive kids. APS dealt with lawsuits in the past where it was shown that some demographic groups were disciplined more often than others. As a result, APS decided to stop disciplining. Voila -- the problem of inequitable discipline has disappeared.

This is absolutely true. But the situation is greatly exacerbated by the leadership problems at the school. All schools have to deal with a lack of serious consequences in APS (often in the name of “equity”), but not all of them turn into hot messes like this.

I’m curious about the lunchtime consequences, though. Whuuuut??

Yep. Oakridge has the same guidance from APS as all other elementary schools, but it’s the worst by far. I know a lot of subs who refuse to work at oakridge.

I do too. And while I have considered subbing, you couldn’t pay me enough to sub there.

I do think that the teachers at oakridge are wonderful. I volunteer at the school at am impressed by them. If only we could get a principal change…

Not happening at our APS. Oakridge sounds like a hot mess

I can tell you that APS has definitely not stopped discipline

What can they do? Nothing. Not since the whole "every student is entitled to an equal education" BS came about.

They have replaced principals. They could do it with her. I admit I don't know all the details, but Gunston, for instance, has a much better principal this year than it did in other years. I think that a lot of people are just fooled by her saccharine white savior act, so the county is reluctant to do anything. But if people keep complaining maybe things will change.

She was a fave of Coach Murphy, and that seemed to be what was protecting her job in the PKM years. Don’t know how aware Duran is of the situation.

So make him aware. Much more constructive than complaining here.

They haven’t but the discipline is ineffective and is stressing everyone out. I think the principal is being crazier about discipline because she’s on notice from the district but everything is just getting worse. Which I didn’t think was possible.

People are trying! There have been numerous PTA meetings and other meetings with the county about it. Not with Duran since he added a bunch of administrative positions and delegated stuff like this.

I made them aware of an incident and spoke to someone who said they would look into it, but never heard back.

What exactly is she on notice for?

Exactly the sort of thing you’re probably talking about, plus low test scores.

Yeah. They replace principals and send them to Syphax where they get paid to mess more stuff up. But at least she wouldn't be Oakridge's problem anymore

I dunno, I really, really dislike Dr. Wright but I’m sure she could do good things in a different role. She just needs to not be in charge of children. Or teachers.

I overheard her yelling at a student in the office who was crying. She was really mean and calling the girl a crybaby, etc. I felt so bad for the child.
Anonymous
No one who calls a child a crybaby should be employed in an elementary school. It’s amazing that tapes of her rampages haven’t been leaked yet.
Anonymous
So, as a parent if she’s on notice and there have been complaints what can we do? Start a petition? I’m tired of just sitting back and hoping something happens when it’s clear they are just covering things up and not going to make a change.

That is appalling! I sincerely hope you reported this to the superintendent and school board.
