Horrifying: turmeric often purposefully spiked with lead

ConsumerLab tested turmeric powders for lead and McCormick came out clean. Now I only buy McCormick turmeric.

It’s frustrating how everything has issues, even when you try to do healthy things. I’ve been using a McCormick organic powder. I’ve figured it probably doesn’t even do much but why not… but if it contains lead maybe it’s not a good idea.

Penzey’s, Spice House, Diaspora, Burlap and Barrel. I prefer the latter two.

I’m Indian and buy turmeric from the Indian grocery store. No idea if it’s safe. This freaks me out.

How about Trader Joe’s turmeric?

I don't begrudge anyone's efforts to stay safe, but I do think any big multinational American brand would be safer in general, because the minute anything was tainted and someone got sick or died, the company would be sued out of existence and people would go to prison. That same risk just doesn't exist for small exporters/importers.

Lead poisoning will take a long time to show up and how would they link it specifically to that particular turmeric?

Worked with a family whose little girl's blood levels showed lead when they do the testing at the physician's office (required in Montgomery county). They traced it to the turmeric the family was using for cooking.

This has been going on for decades. Not sure why it's making the news now. I usually make my own ground turmeric. It's not difficult.
