From a practical standpoint, don’t really want to coach your teen through getting a motorcycle license endorsement and then paying for a teen’s motorcycle insurance?

Riding safely requires the operator to be able to anticipate other drivers’ actions. Until your kid is an excellent defensive driver, he’s not ready for a two-wheeled ride. That takes a lot of hours behind the wheel and the maturity of more fully formed executive functions.

I say no but I see kids on Vespa/scooters and small motorcycles around town. I also see them on electric bikes, which are motorcycle adjacent.

Hi OP! Motorcycle owner here. Got my first when I was a teen and went off to college.

Dad was a doctor and he hated motorcycles; his cousin died on one.

Ordinarily I would be all for your DC getting a motorcycle (and you can tell him that).

But not in DC.

I have lived all over the US; I raced WERA for 10 years.

In my opinion, DC is possibly the worst place in the US to ride.

Horrible drivers and tourists from other regions are major issues. Infrastructure is crumbling.

My aunt was in a coma after riding on one. There is no reason your kid needs to take that risk. Find another way to get his thrills. Eg skateboarding with equipment on.

My kids have known this from the day they could comprehend. I know 3 people who died in motorcycle accidents and 1 who is in a wheelchair.

I am so lax on so many things and usual get slammed on dcum for my permissiveness but no way would I let my kid get a motorcycle. Get an ebike instead. Honestly ebikes are also way more dangerous than most things parents freak out about but they are way safer than motorcycles.

Eh, technically true but most 18 year olds are financially dependent and you still can and should exercise some leverage if you are supporting them. Regardless, I would take every minute delay I could get. Use those months to change DC's heart and mind. Show them statistics. Maybe they will come to their senses by then.
