Going from AB Calc direct to Multi-variable; do the concepts align correctly?

Apparently this sequence is done by several students each year.

My "goal" is just to help my kid pick a senior math course. The other option to these courses is AP stats.

I guess what I meant is what does your kid want to study? Although regardless, I would go with AP Stat.

If you want to continue with math, you might be better off with the sequence I describe above picking it up in college. If you don't, then you are good with the AP Calc AB. I would think that taking AP Stat and continuing with the math sequence are viewed as equally rigorous in the college application process. Other people may have better formed opinions on that. My HS didn't offer anything beyond Calc AB nor did it offer AP Stat.

OP here. The kid has a new found interest in engineering. He/she is taking physics C (mechanics and electricity/magnetism) concurrently with Calculus AB. It's been a crazy ride of a class but he/she really likes it.

Why would you want to do that? Most kids can't catch up in college and drop out of hard STEM majors.

Not every school offers Calc BC. This is back in the dark ages, but mine didn't, and I did fine as a science major at a T20.

Your DC’s school sounds very inflexible- not allowing kids to take Calc BC after taking Calc AB. If your DC is changing their mind from pre-med track to applying to engineering major(are you the same OP from the other thread?) I think it will be more competitive to have Calc BC on the transcript. Can your DC talk to their counselor and ask to make an exception?

DP. You probably took calc 2 in college. The question is about OP's kid not being permitted by their private high school to take calc BC senior year. The student is currently taking AB. Apparently the options are multivariable or AP stats, neither of which make sense.

No.

My kid tells me that some kids go straight from AB to Multivariate. (But our school recommends
AB->BC->multiv

Your school must have things set up to do that--otherwise, they wouldn't recommend it.

There are online courses in AP-BC calc. Kid could enroll in one of those, and then be ready for multi next year.

Take AP Stat, useful course for research projects in college. Don’t place out of college math curriculum entry courses. AP courses still much slower than college courses. If over prepared, kid can focus on other courses and bank the A. If not prepared get help in the form of a tutor as soon as you can.
