UVA Echols

I really don’t understand the college application process, it just feels so random much of time, and maybe that’s clarity in and of itself.

FCPSs don’t rank.

Echols doesn’t mean today what it used to mean. So don’t be discouraged.

In the late dark ages, Rodmans were selected primarily because they were highly qualified academically, very advanced math courses with top grades and high end SAT/ACT. Think top 10% at TJ or Blair magnet. Goal of both Echols and Rodman was to improve yield of top students.

Neither Echols nor Rodman come with any money.

Yes it does. Every student is ranked by computer. They just tell you that because they don’t want the drama. Anyone with a brain ca. figure this out. We also know this because at least once a year someone on a FCPS high school under releases the computerized rankings. The college counselors also know the rank which ties in the the “most rigorous” box

I read once the stats have to be there but they know almost as soon as they read the essays.

False. Echols offers three full scholarships. Google it. It also funds student independent research

From the UVA/Echols FAQs: "Echolas is not a stipend or merit scholarship program. The Echols Scholars Program is purely academic and has no financial component. There are 3 small scholarships available to Echols Scholars which are administered through the Center for Undergraduate Excellence. The Ingrassia Family Echols Scholars Research Fund provides financial support for student research associated with completing a Distinguished Major thesis. The Office of Financial Aid does not give special consideration to Echols Scholars when aid packages are being determined."

So not sure where the "full scholarships" comment is coming from

I do think that the full-ride Jefferson and Walentas scholarships come with Echols status.

Please explain yourself. Of course it’s a big deal

Right here ..”three endowed scholarships”. https://echols.as.virginia.edu/admission-echols-scholars-program

Yes, but those are not full-ride scholarships. One is for $3K, one is for $4K (and the Echols website doesn't say how much the other one is for). I'm not arguing with your point that there are some financial opportunities Echols scholars can apply for, just saying that none of them provides a full-ride.

My son is an Echols Scholar (1st Year). He had the stats, but I really think it came down to his essays, ECs, and recommendations. He went to Governor's School and is just one of those kids who is curious and loves to learn. Yes, they're looking for good students academically, but there has to be something more than test scores and GPA.
