But otherwise, it sounds fine for any 3rd grade player.

Yes, it’s required and no one else in his team gets it out of the dog pile.

Than it is more than likely your son needs to make that pass for the other kid to score. If he doesn't then the score doesn't count. He's doing exactly what he's supposed to do. The coaches notice that.

Any competent coach would notice and select the kid who gets the ground balls all the time.

Parent: With kindness, make sure you have a stick of your own. Practice throwing well, and also having your kid (who is probably sweet & enthusiastic at this age) go after your "whoopsie" passes. Catching bad passed is part of lax, and praising effort for ground ball pick ups is KEY. Watch some HS games and talk about the players who have grit and make the most of bad situations.

As always, wall ball.

At this age the ball is on the ground a lot and he’s always the tone who gets it from the dog pile and makes the pass. Every time basically.. since he’s passing, he doesn’t usually score though. Would you encourage him to let someone else pass to score and stand out or will the coaches be aware that he’s getting possession of the ball and contributing as well? I just don’t want him to be passed up on because he’s always assisting. A lot of times he will run it up to the goal and pass it right before and his teammate makes it from 3 feet away because he was standing there ready. This is probably a silly question but we have no experience with the sport. They are not in actual positions at this point. It’s a rec league.

My son was the same- lots of GBs and assists through elementary and early middle school. Coaches loved him for doing the "dirty" work. Always had a place for him on A teams and was asked to play up because of these skills (most kids just like to shoot and score).

So this is nuts-as fast as you can from any organization that is putting together a select team of 3rd graders. Encourage your son to play a bunch of sports and develop whatever athleticism he has instead of becoming a lax robot.

?

Why couldn’t a third grader try out for a select team but also be involved in other sports recreationally?

My point is it is too early to be “selecting” anyone at that age. Make it fun and develop skills, don’t make it about money grabs and braggy parents.

That ship left the dock a long time ago. Not just for lacrosse either.

Let him cradle indoors use a tennis ball.

Stick in hand.

OP, are we just talking about rec with multiple teams at each level? If so, don't sweat it either way.

On some level I agree with you, but this is how club and travel teams are now. If it were up to me we would stick with park district offerings but they were really geared toward complete beginners

This is bizarre. It’s a rec league, with various levels. This is not a travel team. It’s $200 a season to join.

This. At this age it’s more about being aggressive on ground balls. Don’t sweat the other stuff.
