Yes, some people also misunderstand what "universal PK" means in DC. What this means is that the city will ensure there are enough PK spots in the city so that anyone who wants one can get one. It does not mean that you are guaranteed a PK spot at your IB school or even a nearby school. Because the program grew out of the existing Head Start program, the public PK spots in the city are tilted towards the neighborhoods where historically fewer people could afford private PK (east). But even at these schools, you mostly are not guaranteed PK spots even at your IB (there are a handful of schools that have guaranteed early access for IB families, which is essentially a head start program, but these also tend to be schools that you could lottery into at PK from elsewhere if your really wanted to). It is very typical for families IB for schools like Maury and Brent to not get PK spots unless they have sibling preference. So "universal" means there are spots available. Not that you are guaranteed a spot at your preferred school. |
| Because anyone who can afford a $1.2 million+ house can afford one more year of daycare. |
It’s not titled towards anything… It was literally only put into schools that were T1 at the time the program was created. All T1s and no others. A few schools have gotten rid of it since then for space reasons. Nowhere has added it. That is the whole explanation, |
