Middle age and having a hard time keeping up with fashion

Come ask these questions in the beauty thread. You’ll be likely to get more answers.

Ask yourself if you are depressed..it is a possibility. No shaming..but I am 73 and though I dress for comfort I don't "give up."

Any jeans except skinny or jegging are in style.

You need to find a fashion blog for 40+ women and follow it—someone who’s more focused on everyday style than high fashion. Here’s an example:

StitchFix is pretty easy/no brainer if you want to keep updated. I did that during most of my 30s while having babies and not having time to know what was happening with fashion.

I'm now in my 40s and get a kick out of seeing the sock trend at the gym and just tried it myself. Also, as someone who came of age in the stick thin/heroin chic 90s where body shaming was the norm, it's soooo refreshing to see younger generations wearing crop tops and stuff even with a roll hanging out here and there. It makes me brave enough to try it sometimes at the gym.

Stitch Fix had my sister looking frumpier than ever.

Agree with PP that pretty much anything but skinny is fine at this point. What irritates me -- and answers your question about "do they hit your shoes?: -- is that it is pretty in style to flood. I hate the look, but it is what is in. You can see it with these flares and these straight leg jeans from Mother:

More of an edgy style with the wide-legs (I love it, it kinda reminds me of the baggy jeans of my youth) are seen here: https://www.bloomingdales.com/shop/product/mother-the-half-pipe-high-rise-ankle-wide-leg-jeans-in-this-is-how-i-roll?ID=4877649&CategoryID=1206859

But as for your initial request, here are some older women killing it in jeans:

Darn, that's all I have these days. I hate skinny jeans too, but I thought they were in fashion. Can I go back to my flares or boot cut? Love those, super flattering.

I try to strike a balance and not just give up.

Same. I'm 53.

Same. I'm 53, too

I wear what is flattering on me, if it happens to be on trend great.

I’m only 36, but the styles and silhouettes that have dominated the last 15 years or so have definitely shifted. Tight/fitted clothing is out, and oversized is in. This is harder imo because the proportions and lengths of everything matter more in order to make them seem flattering and intentional.
Something that has helped me is seeking out influencers or bloggers that reflect my sense of style and “copy” their looks. You can also search on Pinterest (“how to wear straight leg jeans with boots” etc). Merrick’s Art is great for this!

Yes, go back to flares or bootcut.

Agree, but not the ones you wore in 2001. Current flares and bootcuts have a higher rise and people are wearing them a little shorter. Not grazing the floor.

Accurate ^^

You can go back to flares and boot cut jeans, but not the old ones hanging in your closet...

DP. They look fine.

I wouldn't necessarily want to dress like this person, but her Spring 24 trend forecasts aren't bad at all. And anyone looking to see what is in style for jeans -- her recent post on denim trends sums it up well.
