It is unpaid for HS students but a great experience if selected.

NIST closed Friday. My kids decided not to do it.

Sorry I did not check the date. For anyone else in the future. My DD did this for 3 summers. It became paid in college and she got a publication from it.

The acronym is STEAM, not “stem.”

I think it's too late for SEAP, but in case others want it for their child next summer.

Does your kid have any actual skills? If not, you can see if you know anyone that works at like Bethesda Games in Rockville and see if they need a grunt.

Thanks! I think a paying retail job etc would be great too. He wants to focus on internships right now but if that doesn't work out, he will branch out.

Again, does your kid actually have STEM skills? Mine was paid to work at numerous start-ups, beginning after Freshman year of HS...he knows how to do a lot with 12+ computer languages, hardware/electronics, etc.

The jobs with NASA, Mitre, NSA will all expect your kid to actually know how to do something...not just be interested in STEM. There are lots of kids from TJ, Blair, etc. who are fairly skilled, and those schools also have parents working at those places which helps too.

He is in a magnet engineerin g program and on the robotics team.

Or what about a Pathways internship with the Department of the Navy? Closes today!

Thanks for posting this. My kid is only in middle school, but this sounds like something he would be interested in eventually. I guess good to know early since a lot of them require background one might not have if they didn't plan in advance. I mean what % of HS kids have professional references (from a supervisor/coworker/employment) before Jr year?

Reach out to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 26. They have a "summer helpers" program starting this summer in Maryland, paying $15/hr, including classroom time and on the job training as an electrician. Participants have to be 17yo+.

If he is in a magnet program, he should ask his teachers about which agencies they recommend/school may have relationships. Again, you probably need to move quick with the various deadlines.

If they want to be an assistant counselor, SciKidz stem day camps will probably be hiring for the summer.
