| Apparently some of the teens are not from moco. They are also not legal to drive. What is going on?? Someone dropped them off to run around near schools with guns on a Friday afternoon? |
They could take a bus. |
| This is a very strange story |
What is the point of constant texting? It is not like the parents can do anything at that moment. It only drives up anxiety. |
MCPD had reports of shots fired around 1:20pm outside of Northwood. It sounds like the juvenile suspects ran through the nearby neighborhood towards Sligo MS, and then Sligo MS went into lockdown pretty quickly. Sligo MS's lockdown was lifted at 2:00pm but Northwood didn't enter into a lockdown until 2:10pm. This whole timeline just seems off. |

RAVEN 2 Assists in Apprehension of Teens Following Shots Fired Call
For Immediate Release: Friday, February 9, 2024 Gaithersburg, MD - Seven teenagers are in police custody following a reported shooting on Friday, February 9, 2024. At approximately 1:22 p.m. Montgomery County Department of Police – 4th District officers were dispatched to the area of University Boulevard West at Gable Street for a shots fired call. Fourth District officers relayed information that a group of teenage males wearing mostly black clothing, had run from the location towards Sligo Creek Parkway near Tenbrook Drive. The RAVEN 2 drone was deployed to assist in locating the teens. RAVEN 2 quickly located subjects matching the lookout description on the Sligo Creek Parkway Trail near Sligo Middle School. RAVEN 2 maintained aerial observation and guided MCPD and Maryland National Capital Park Police officers into the area. The teens ran towards Sligo Middle School, which was placed on a brief lockdown. Officers established a perimeter and were able to apprehend seven teens. Two bb guns were recovered and shell casings from a handgun, which has not been found, were located in the initial area of the shots fired call. The teens, all juveniles, ranging between the ages of 14 and 15-years-old, were transported to the 4th District station and are expected to be released to their parents. Several of the teens were not Montgomery County residents. |
Then what? Parents are going to ground them? |
They should have been sent to a juvenile detention center. Not released to their parents. What the hell? They found shell casings so they know one of them had a gun even if they got rid of it at some point. |
| I am still unclear on why Northwood went on lockdown. Word is the arrested students did not go there or even attend MCPS. This is just a terrible and confusing situation and we probably will never get a clear answer because of juvenile privacy laws. |
I thought they went into a shelter in place not a lockdown. |
Principal's message said in deliberation with police they went into lockdown first then switched to shelter. |
That and kids need to be focused on their environment and on silent signals then adults may be giving. Plus kids trying to get to their phones can slow down the process of kids moving to safety. If your kid texted you during a lockdown please hug them and tell them you love them and remind them never to do that again. |
I imagine that the police didn’t know where the kids lived or attended at the time the decision was made. |
They probably didn't know if the students were Northwood students and l whether any more involved were inside the school etc. |
The shots fired happened across the street from the school. Lockdown was definitely the right move, but like the person above I am wondering why it didn’t go into lockdown sooner. Students will open doors for people waiting outside the media center all the time. |
