New to MCPS for 10th grade

+1 My sophomore, non IB magnet student, is currently taking IB AAF math, not to mention the AP classes they are taking . So, they can even start taking IB classes as early as sophomore year.

They can join the IB diploma program along with the magnet IB cohort starting in 11th grade. The peer group is super high achieving, g&t level. I have an older DC who was part of the RMIBDP program starting in 9th grade. Amazing high achieving peer group. They also take AP classes in addition to IB classes, and many self study for AP exams that they did not take the class for. A lot of them get 5s on these self study exams.

MCPS puts out a list of all HS, and how many IB/AP exams were taken at each school, and the scores of each group. RM usually has a ton of different IB/AP exams taken.

Not all HS in MCPS that have IB have the same course selections. There was a whole thread about it, and how it is not equitable that not all schools have the various courses. However you look at it, the reason why that is is due to demand. RM has a huge demand for various IB classes.

It is a huge school, though, and over crowded, if that matters. They have open lunch, and many kids go to Rockville Town Center or the surrounding strip malls for lunch.

You should visit each school you are interested in. The interior of the school grounds and size may also make a difference in your selection.

Another vote for RMIB -- although getting into the IB program for 11th and 12th isn't guaranteed, it is an option. The magnet program (aka the Middle Years Programme) for 9th and 10th won't be an option. My DD did RMIB and has plenty of friends who were in regular RM but transferred into the IB program for 11th and 12th. Also the IB kids do a mix of IB and AP classes, so plenty of rigor.

OP apparently most posters here can not read.

You already knew it was too late for the Magnet programs.

MCPS is a great school system ignore the idiots on this forum that complain. Not that it's perfect but it is pretty dam good in it's Stem offerings in most HS across the county.

BCC, WJ, Whitman, Wootton, Churchill, RM, Blair all have what you are looking for.

WJ has a great math program always has.

Mine are Wootton graduates they went to MIT, Carnige Mellon, Georgia Tech, Stanford from there. Their peers at all the schools listed above did the same. Mine were also all accepted to our designated math magnet and declined because our home school was great academically.

Poolesville is not in the location you want.

Just make sure you advocate for them to be in the highest math/science courses available in MCPS they will be fine. Don't let anyone tell you your kid needs to test into courses they do not.

Apparently you can't read, either.

RMIB allows 10th graders to take some IB classes, and then join RMIB in 11th grade (with the right grades and scores). They may not be part of the RMIBDP cohort in 10th grade, but they can take some classes with that cohort.

Poolesville is quite rural, but it's the top school in MCPS (per some rankings).

I would strongly recommend Poolesville for your child. It's an all school magnet so there are tons of friend options for your child and your child will be able to take magnet classes in the stem magnet there. Their robotics team went to worlds last year.

It's much smaller than the other schools mentioned and has more of a warm feeling. It's a place where it's easy to make friends and almost everyone is a bit of a nerd and I mean that as a compliment.

For a shy child it's easy to get lost in the larger schools especially when coming in a year later than most kids.

agree, and we are in the RM cluster, my kid went to RMIB.

This depends—are you only looking at schools? If so, I agree with Poolesville, although it’s not southern moco.

But if you’re looking for a more urban experience, your kids might be happy there but you will not be.
