Band. Kid absolutely loves it. (Has had good experiences in other classes, but the music teacher is especially good.)

How are the Art classes? Our kid loves Art.

Band parent here. My kid’s friends who take art really like it. But for 6th and 7th, art is paired with tech so you have 1 semester of art (studio or digital) and 1 semester of tech. My kid has zero interest in tech so that is how they ended up in band (which has been great). It is not until 8th grade that kids can take a full year of art. Band, orchestra, and chorus are full-year.

Yes, but they don’t guarantee a bus to BCC for Spanish 4 in 8th grade, so be prepared for the possibility of driving yourself or switching languages in 8th grade.

A poster said there's a bus for students to go to BCC for Chinese. Can't Spanish 4 students ride same bus as students taking Chinese?

They can no longer take Spanish 4 at B-CC.

I would talk to a counselor about this. If they really can’t take Spanish 4 at BCC, then I would ask to replace the foreign language with a tech credit class in 8th grade, to just get that out of the way before high school. I certainly would not put my kid in French 1 if kid didn’t want to take it.

Does this middle school have 8th period?

I think we were told at a parents’ night for incoming 6th graders that middle school students could no longer take classes at BCC and we should plan accordingly. It sounded like a BCC rule and it didn’t sound too challenging to deal with.

Yet there are a handful of students from Westland taking class(es) at B-CC (do not know if Spanish or another subject). So it must not be a B-CC thing or B-CC is giving priority to Westland students.

I can’t imagine B-CC is allowing Westland students to take classes but not Silver Creek students. Likely something on this thread is not accurate.

The parent interested in having the 6th grader begin with Spanish 2 should contact SCMS to get more information. Another option is to contact central office to understand the policy — I found the World Languages Supervisor to be very helpful and happy to talk through options in a different matter. I spoke with François Vanderplas. Her contact info is on the central office world language page.

Yes a B-CC teacher has said that a few Wasteland MS students go to B-CC to take a class. To the poster asking about starting in Spanish 2, check with SCMS. Likely your kid will have to take a placement test if you think they need to start in Level 2.

Yes SCMS requires a placement test to be placed in an advanced language class.
