The biggest issue was telling them their credit card was declined or they had a billing issue and their membership had lapsed. Lord help me |
The best was being told “you’re too smart for this job” when I was working retail … why thanks, but I couldn’t afford an unpaid internship after college while applying to grad school. Also mortifying because they said it in front of my colleagues. |
| I was an intern at age 40 after staying home a few years with my kids. |

Did not feel demeaned as I knew my value but more on how women treated ( 20 yrs ago)…
A temp job during college/ summer. On a construction site in the trailer to do admin work…I was told by agency the dress requirement was a skirt or dress! I mean..lol…the on-site manager was actually very nice and respectful but who put that in there. Completely ridiculous. Hopefully would not happen today. |
YOU GO!!! |
| Assigned a new job every 6 months because of turnover. The designated jack of all trades. |
+2 Full-circle (in a good way!) |

When I worked at KMart as a teenager a man snapped his fingers at me and said "Girl, come here!" I actually found it funny because dude was at Kmart.
I do feel like teens should work retail/food service for at least one summer so they understand how to treat workers. |
| I was a Hill intern for a Republican congressperson. A crazy one. |

I studied theater (acting) in college. A couple of years after I was struggling with restaurant jobs and the occasional modeling gig when a friend I was in a show with who worked (in sales) at a very large theatrical supply company told me they were hiring in their shipping and receiving area and that it paid okay and the hours would allow me to be free for rehearsals. It sounded great to me. I started the job and fwiw I am a great employee and pretty much always get promoted because I'm early, go above and beyond, am super reliable, etc. But ... at this job, I was overseen by the woman who was the secretary to the owners of the company. She was super mean to me, and about two weeks in she came back to see me on the loading dock area where I worked and, with the doors open to the sales area so everyone could hear her, started screaming at me about not having cleaned the bathrooms. She was all "Not once since you have been here have they been cleaned!" Well, yeah, because no one told me it was my job to clean them and I don't think that chore regularly comes along with shipping/receiving. She then brought me a bucket and mop and yelled at me to "Get in there and scrub those toilets now." To this day, I don't think cleaning the bathrooms had been the job of the shipping/receiving clerk in the past, I think she just decided to make me do it. Or, like I said, if it was part of my job, no one ever told me. Then about a week later the guy I'd been in the show with told me he wanted me to listen to a song he was using in a show and he came back to my area and gave me some headphones. I put them on and was listening as I packed some things up. Same awful secretary lady comes running back there and grabs them off of my head with a bunch of "This is a job, you are working, not listening to music" nonsense.
So, it was awful and humiliating. But let me be clear, cleaning bathrooms wasn't humiliating (although I certainly didn't want to do it), it was this stupid woman's treatment of me that was humiliating. And it was designed to be. I don't know what her problem was, I never did anything to her. I quit after a few months, Ghosted. They deserved it. |
| I killed lab animals. was creepy these bugged out cats, rabbits and mice all injected with stuff. We Kill them and red bag them. |
| I was an intern way past an acceptable age to be an intern in a highly toxic office. I started my career late after some really tough personal issues, and despite my pride for getting into a legitimate career path, I was treated like absolute trash by my coworkers and customers alike. I left with nothing lined up. A decade later I’m literally make hundreds of thousands of dollars more than any of them so I guess…things worked out ok! |
+3 right on, crouton! |
Are you me? |
| Some people probably thought it was humiliating but I loved it. I worked at a fast food place when I was in high school. I lived in a college town and everyone else who worked there except the manager was a college boy. I was a girl in HS and thought it was the best thing ever. I even put on the restaurant’s mascot outfit and waved a sign at the corner. I never felt embarrassed by those guys. They were all so nice and cute. |
