What has your experience been there? You sign up and then wait? Is it generally a long wait?

Not the MLK but we went to the library in Howard County and walked right in as the only people. Once for us and once with our kids, both in the last year. Am never trying with post offices again.

Take some initiative and personal responsibility and don't rely on the federal government for something that one clearly doesn't need to. You can create your own remiinder in your personal digital calendar. Google works great for us but YMMV.

That's on you. Check your passport expiration date when you book your travel for you and your kids so you don't have these surprises. Guaranteed your email reminder would go to your junk mail anyway.

Make a weekend appointment at the post office in Merrifield (Fairfax, right by Mosaic District). Did this in January for our kid, there were plenty of appointments available. Paid to expedite the application and received the new passport in two weeks.

You can get it done in time but yes you will pay to expedite. Oh well.

I mean the DMV sends me a reminder. I don't think its the government's responsibility but there ARE government agencies that send out email reminders when important documentation is about to expire. I get reminders from for my driver's license and for certain background checks/clearance.
