Doe major matter at top schools?

Anonymous
The only time it matters at top colleges which don't admit separately--say Columbia College v. Columbia SEAS--is when the student has a strong, documented interest in an underutilized but very strong major . Which majors are strong and underutilized varies by college. Ones I know of at particular Ivies include geology, Egyptology, and linguistics. It's not enough to say you want to major in it, you have to demonstrate that you've done enough in the area that you didn't decide to claim an interest in it for the first time when you thought about applying to college.

If you go to an i-bank feeder like Bucknell, join a frat, network and graduate with at least a 3.2, you'll make it to The Street regardless of your major.
