Or they overlook the kid making all their 3s, grabbing all the rebounds, going for fast breaks etc. Mostly it seems like no one is paying any attention. |
My kid who didn’t make it did make a lot of shots but he also passed a lot. My husband took him, not me. DH said our son was assisting others too much. This would be good teamwork on a team but not at a tryout. The kid he passed to who made a basket would get credit and DS who passed the ball would not be noticed. |
| 100% this. Coaches like the flash though it’s a dumb move in the end. |
| Coaches are paying attention well before tryouts. |
This is correct. And I would avoid the coaches with the reputations of going for flash over substance. The good ones will have well balanced teams, and a lot of good attitudes. Organizations like Family over Fame, Nova94, and a few other "good" teams hire the wrong coaches, who take the wrong kids, and end up having big problems throughout the year. Focus on connections and word of mouth recommendations. |
| You would think that the bigger the organization, the better the coaches they hire. |
Some will make offers on the spot. You know it when you see it. |
| Is it better to go for a mid team that offers lots of playing time or to go with a flashier team and a bench position for first season? |
More playing time. |
| My concern with OP's scenario is you finally get an offer but you were the coach's 20th pick or whatever, and you pay your money for your kid to sit on the bench. |
I've seen the opposite actually, which is shocking. I don't know how much it's changed, but Nova94, Nova Cavs, and Family over Fame had terrible coaches last year. A lot of the coaches are high school coaches too. Very concerning. |
+1 |
| How late in the process is too late to get an offer? Most of my kiddos team heard last week. We got an offer yesterday. Is that too late? |
I’m new to this but you just got a spot that someone else declined. I believe they give offers out and as the team gets declines, the coach goes down the list and offers kids sports. |
I wouldn't feel great about it. Do you have any other options? Does the org have play time philosophies? Some will say they try to get every kid X percent of the game. |
