How do you know if something is real gold?

I took some things to a jeweler. He took a rubbing of one piece and used a chemical to determine if it was gold.

Look for the hallmark. Else take it to a pawn shop/jeweler and they can test it. Most places now have laser testers (a microwave sized box that you place the piece into) that tells you the exact composition of the item. They are really accurate and quick.

If it reacts with a magnet it's NOT gold.

Something would have to be so old that the stamp rubbed off that is highly unlikely.
