Sweet spot of square feet for a family of 5?

Anonymous
Our current house is 2600 sq ft 4 bedroom/2.5 bath with an unfinished basement. We have 3 kids who are 5 years apart start to finish so we will have all 3 home as teenagers. I would like 1000 sq ft more but I don’t want to move so we will probably just stay put.

We have 2400 sq feet plus a finished basement.

4 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms, dining room, eat in kitchen. We have a good sized yard.

I have 3 kids. We have lived here almost 11 years and the kids are 14, 12, and 9. This house is really fine for us and I know that before I know it, the oldest will be off to college which is crazy to think about.

If money was no object - I would take a 5th bedroom to have a guest bedroom and an office! We are not moving though, and we really do have enough room.

We have 5,000 for a family of 4 and it feels right.

I'm guessing you also claim to be middle class.

Yes we only have one house!

Family of 4 in 2500 Sq ft including a finished walk-out basement. It's enough for us day to day, but I sometimes wish we had a better guest room. So for a family of 5, I'd guess around 3000-3500 would be perfect.

2500 square feet of finished space.

My ideal would be 4000 square feet, but it's really layout that's the most important. Our last house was close to that but had a tiny pantry and laundry room that were a pain. There was a study that was too small to be useful and a living room that was rarely used. If we'd stayed, we probably would have done some re-configuring of space.

We are 5 (we were 6 before my mom passed away in September) in 1800 sq ft. We have plenty of space.

Layout is more important than just square footage. I hate houses that have a warren of small rooms.

We are 5 in a 2300 sq foot ranch - 4 bedroom, 2.5 bath, big yard, no basement. This is big enough for us and easy enough to maintain. I wish we had a sunroom or some other 2nd gathering space for when the kids are in the living room with friends. We have an office, so my DH and I hang out in there and read or watch a movie, but I'd rather do it in a sunroom. I also wish we had 3 full bathrooms.

Probably about 3000. I don’t like big houses.

I have three kids and we have about 3000 square feet, finished basement with guest room/office. Four bedrooms upstairs. It is perfect for us and we moved into it from a 2000 square foot house.

Layout is key - you do NOT want an open layout. Everyone needs public spaces to watch tv, play videogames or have friends over. Also the open floor plan is WAY too loud when you have people coming in and out.

We've got 3 in 2000 square feet. Three bedrooms, but two are huge so it's pretty good for sharing. 3 full bathrooms. I think our house is perfect. MAYBE 2500, but no bigger. Big houses are a PITA.

As they say in the real estate biz: Layout. Layout. Layout.

(Or they don't, but should.)
