Teens finally caught on that long coats can be fashionable, while providing warmth. I understand why you son said it, but long coats have historically been an adult staple. I was happily surprised that my 17 year old wanted a long coat for Christmas. My kids just started wearing coats again, after years of hoodies.
Keep wearing your long coat. |

OP,
I'm writing from the snowy Midwest and I give you permission.
We'd not make it though winter without long coats. |
+1 son sounds clueless and also rude A long coat is not a miniskirt! And at any rate OP should wear what she wants. |
| 55 and don't like to be cold - I wear long coats |
| Your son is clueless, OP. Ignore him. |
this isn't even what i would consider a long coat! And yes, you can wear whatever you want, and below the knee coats are classics! |
|
OMG woman, get a grip.
WEAR WHAT YOU WANT. Damn. |
|
What is he talking about? I am an adult (45) with a professional “corporate” job and I wear long coats like this -
https://www.mackage.com/collections/womens-wool-coats/products/kate?variant=42953168322775 If I saw a teenager or early 20s young woman wearing a long, wool belted coat I would assume she was wearing her mom’s coat. The exception would be if she was wearing a suit or business clothes and obviously headed to work. |
| You can your son that you can wear whatever you damn well please! |
That is not long. It is also not hip or trendy. My husband has worn the men’s equivalent of that Fjallraven coat for the past 10years and he’s 46. He looks like a normal suburban dad - not some hipster trying to look cool. |
| Long coats are practical - raincoats, dress coats, long puffy coats. They are meant to keep you warm and/or dry. Older people are the ones who will prioritize being warm/dry over fashion. |
|
what?!? I think the opposite. I see older women in long coats much, MUCH more than young women. |
| Um, what? I’m 53 and very confused by this question. I would just get the coat. |
