Real question… is DCUM

Case in point.

I think a lot of it trolling, and I think it's because DCUM draws from a wider audience now. Some of them have an agenda (I definitely think people use this site to influence politics) but a lot of it reminds me of my brother scrolling Instagram and making goofy jokes in the comments. Basically, more armchair trolls just sticking their oar in, to no purpose.

I don't think it's any meaner than it used to be. But there's less useful discussion between the meanness.

I think the responses are the same but some of the post are paid content or bots.

No one should hope to find intelligent discourse on the internet anymore. It’s done.

Even though it's been anonymous for a while now, the increasing size and accessibility make it seem even more anonymous = less thoughtful and more mean

At the same time, I have long thought that this would be a GREAT site for Russian bots or other intelligence services to target -- lots of high powered zip codes represented here, and an ability to plant discord, stir culture wars, etc. seems like it may be pretty unmatched given this is a plain old parenting site.

I don't live in the area any more and can 100% say that the idea of returning to DC is less and less appealing given what I read here. Even the non-nasty posts validate all my stereotypes about the DC (where I grew up!) as power hungry, status obsessed, rat racy and overly Type A.

You are making the mistake of associating living in a influential location with having influence. It's roughly the same as saying, I live next door to NASA, we all must be rocket scientists. I am oretty sure the people in charge are relatively unaware of DCUM. And if they do read the Political section, they are even less worried.

I get they aren't the same, of cuorse. But I suspect there is a high % of decision makers captured in the DC active zone. Or wives (or husbands, although most people on here are women I think) of decision makers, or influencers of influencers

It doesn't really matter how many spreadsheets you manage on a daily basis. You aren't making decisions that have any real impact.

Person you are quoting. Nope, don't care about typos etc on here.
Or maybe a case in point about being mean?

I think society as a whole is.

And yet it seems like, despite the power of search engines now and AI (!!) more than ever, DCUM has become a redundant cycle of questions people are too lazy too look up.

How much pizza do I need for this party?

I have teens and it's an epidemic. They ask me all kinds of stupid shit and I tell them to google, which apparently is even too much for them. Not enough folks who knew how to actually research things in an encyclopedia or an atlas. And that translates to absolute laziness of new threads.

Your post is incoherent. If there’s a point in there, I don’t see it.

Agree, OP, it’s a much dumber place. The posts are so different than even a couple of years ago. I think it’s the influx of users from other areas plus a lot of people coming just to troll.

The other day somebody posted that a kid shouldn't eat a bag of clementines because the kid needs real food like fiber.

Yes, DCUM has lots of dumb posters.
