NP here…I had students would’ve benefited from Lexia and sent my administrator a request for licenses for specific students along with reasons why I believed this was a good program for them. Admin wouldn’t approve and the district ran out of licenses.

Elementary schools don’t have a curriculum, even for newcomers. On top of that the district is forcing a full plug in model while increasing our caseloads making it near impossible to meet the needs of our EMLs.

Why did your Admin not approve the request? Is the district increasing your caseload or is there an increase in EML students but not staff to serve them?

Admin is nearly impossible to work with.

The formula MCPS uses to determine our allocation for ELD teachers changed because, “the district has other priorities.”

They didn’t budget for a 548% increase in legal fees, the over $13mill in student sexual assault lawsuit payouts, or salaries for all of the retirees they brought back to fill in for everyone they placed on paid administrative leave. No idea where they are getting the money to pay people like Navarro who are in brand new positions that didn’t exist when they built the budget for the current fiscal year.

The more likely reason for not providing a curriculum for ESOL is not because of unanticipated costs, but because MCPS does not prioritize English Learners, just as it does not prioritize the needs of special education students. And the most marginalized students in the system? That would be English Learners with special education needs.
