OP here--thanks everyone, this is all very helpful!

My DH used to be a dual citizen of a country that has complicated relations with the US. He was told that if he entered that country with his non-US passport then he wouldn’t be able to avail of any US consular services in case something happened.

To be clear, the bolded is US law.

+1. Yes, you are required to enter the US with your US passport to be admitted as a US citizen. This is not optional. You cannot be admitted to the US with an EU passport as a tourist, eg, due to status issues.

Is there any advantage to using one passport over the other when traveling? Particularly when traveling to Europe? I know the wait times in customs are quicker in Europe if one uses an EU passport, but aside from that, are there any good reasons to prefer one over the other? Also, my husband doesn't have an EU passport, so if we were to travel together, does it matter if we use different passports? TIA for any advice.

When you’re going to the EU, you always need to have both. EU for the EU borders and U.S. for the U.S. borders.

Dual citizen here, depending on what country you’re flying to - if you fly in to EU and back to the US, you will need to use your US passport. My first time using EU passport there and US passport back, I was stopped. They don’t like that because of your entry and exit stamp.

+1. I’ve been told the same thing regarding EU countries. If you enter as a citizen of a non US country, the US State dept will consider you a citizen of that country and not help.
