+1. Same. Don't need a personal computer.

A lot of people don’t have a home computer -my DH did all of his online grad school on a work computer (with permission) bc he didn’t want to lug two laptops while traveling for work or school. My dad does anything he needs to do on an iPad, and I rarely open my personal laptop.

We don’t have a home computer either.

So, in anticipation of tomorrow's event, our manager just sent an email out asking everyone to confirm their ability to field emails and work orders remotely.

She replied that she didn't have a computer at home It's 2024. What does that tell you about her?

She's poor or underpaid. You do know that your job can supply her with a "just in case" laptop.

It would have been odd before the rise of large iPads with keyboards. Now, I imagine that it is fairly common.

I didn't have one until COVID forced work from home for me because daycare was closed. If I'd been able to come into the office, I still wouldn't have one.

They don't need a laptop or desktop for personal life.

Women, that is. Men need their "gaming rigs".

I don't know any men who play video games after college.

Therefore, none do. ???

Does she only have a desktop computer in the office? Sounds like your employer needs to issue laptops.

I have an ancient tablet that I only fire up to file my taxes every year and my kid has a Chromebook. Otherwise, adults in the family use issued laptops for work and smartphones for personal email. We used to have personal laptop PCs over a decade ago, but never used them so didn't replace them when they died.

I would never surf the web and send personal emails on my work computer. A very bad idea.

Those large ipads with keyboards often cost much more than a PC laptop, definitely more than a chromebook.

I will not use my personal devices for work. That’s crazy. You want remote work you need to give me secure access with a VPN type setup at the very least. What was the setup OP?

If your employer wants work done from home, supply a laptop.

This.

Yup. It's actually irrelevant whether she has a personal computer, she doesn't have to do work on it. To take it one step further, it sounds like your employer doesn't allow her to telework so why should she magically be allowed when there's snow?

This is an interesting thread! I'm surprised at the number of people who operate only from iPhones and iPads at home. I have a newer iPad with a keyboard but I find there are certain things that don't work as well on iPads, so we have a laptop at home for all of our personal things. I also have a work laptop but never use it for anything personal.
