Staying in this part of Vermont would be great. Less than an hour to many towns worth checking out.

Vermont is not huge so you will find charming towns anywhere. Find the perfect house and go from there. We stayed on Fern Lake/Lake Dunmore in a VRBO with a dock a few years ago and it was just a perfect family vacation.

Bumping this to ask about specific neighborhoods in Burlington. Any specific place walkable to good restaurants/fun things to do?

Burlington is part of a long drive and so it would be nice to spend some time out of the car for a couple of days.

Burlington is not that big, so anything within a walking radius (whatever that means to you) of Church Street would work. Lots of students in the Old North End, so a little south of downtown might be quieter. Keep in mind that Burlington is on a hill, so the farther away from the lake you are, the more you have to walk uphill back to your hotel or airbnb.

This is really helpful, thank you.

Vermont is not huge but it does not feel small. The roads are slow. Road construction season is short so there are slowdowns everywhere now.

There are indeed towns that many people will find charming scattered throughout the state. But there's a lot of poverty here. There are a lot of places where restaurants/stores that would be acceptable to DCUM types are a solid drive. It would not be too hard for those unfamiliar with VT to select an Airbnb that ends up being pretty far from the type of businesses you'd prefer.

Stowe is fantastic - great hiking and lots of restaurants. The bike path through town is gorgeous. We did some long weekends there with teens/tweets and loved it. There is mountain biking and horseback riding nearby as well as the Ben and Jerry's factory tour. We also did Smugglers Notch which is closeby...in the summer when the road through the mountain is open. It's not fancy but there were pools and family activities (games etc) plus a nearby pond to swim/paddleboard. Have fun wherever you choose!
