Is it so terrible to end 12th on AP Calc BC if want to major in CS / you were on advanced math track?

why would he just take calc 3 his senior year? my kid did BC in 10th multivariable in 11rh and is taking stats now in 12th. he doesn’t seem to be sing much writing in that class. i personally don’t see stats as a true math class.

my some did not get into that first round for VT. VT cares deeply for service .

Why would you take calc ab and also calc bc? I thought they were the same except bc has 2 additional units. Maybe I'm missing something.

At my kid's school, you don't take both. Either do pre-calc > calc bc > multivariable or pre-calc > calc ab > stats (or some other math class that's offered)

^^also edit to say: as a senior you are not required to mv calc either. In fact, may only take it if you made a 4 or 5 on bc calc ap exam. But you could take stats or other math of interest in either case.

Fine

At our school they require students to take AB before BC. It's fine. My kid did that and is at Tech.

Are they actually teaching statistics during this course? Or is making a graph and labeling it now considered "writing"? I would definitely check into this assumption and get some feedback before you make a choice.

I agree with PPs that doing calculus and multivariable seems like a better choice. Though your DS will need to take stats, but a serious stats course appropriate for a CS major would leave writing for a different class and focus on the mathematics and perhaps, the philosophical foundations underlying the mathematics, not ask for essays.

Everyone we spoke to, including the teacher, said it's like 1/2 math, 1/2 English class.

CS majors do not need STATS. Data science sure, but not CS. AB to BC is fine if you can't do multivariable calculus.

CS at UMD requires stats as part of degree requirements. So that is not true.

Sounds fine to me unless that would put him at some disadvantage compared to his classmates. Ask his counselor about it to be sure.

He’ll have to do more Calc in college so it would be nice to end Senior year with Calc BC - that way it’s fresh. I think Calc AB to Calc Bc is fine. Redundant yes, but given the context it makes sense.

My kid's school strongly encourages both. It really depends on the school.

Not OP. Remind me not to send my kid to UMD. There is nothing wrong with STATS but it's a waste of time for CS. Nonsense to include it.

Yes, they do.

I’d take it. I use coding in stats for work every day

My DD is in AP Stats and has had no writing so far. It’s been very easy. She took AP Calc in 11th.
