Do Eastern middle school Humanities program kids get into Magnet HS

As the previous posters relay, yes kids from Eastern do get into magnet HS. However, from our experience with our son, who had a few Bs, the grading at Eastern did affect his chances at the more competitive magnet HS. He learned a lot at Eastern, but now finds high school very boring compared to Eastern. I don’t know the black box of decision-making that goes on for selection to the Blair magnets and RMIB but I can tell you they don’t take into account that the kid is coming from Eastern where grading and expectations are very different from other MS. The few Bs were the only thing different from the rest of his cohort. So yes, going to Eastern harmed our kid for high school, he would have been better off going to home MS to get into a competitive magnet HS.

Yes. Both my kids who went to Eastern got into RMIB and CAP.

Not true. Usually a few get in from Eastern. Not many, but probably because not many apply. The Bs would be an issue though. Most kids coming into Blair magnet have high GPAs in MS.

How many Bs? There will be many hundreds with all As and top scores competing for the same spots.

Actually, under the current selection process Bs in humanities subjects are irrelevant to getting a place in the Blair magnet. The selection committee gets MAP-M scores (last of 7th grade and first of 8th) and math and science grades. If you have Bs or even Cs and Ds in other subjects they don’t know and can’t take that into account.

And to add to that, admission to CAP would be different as they look at other non-STEM grades. Same with RMIB.

To PPs who posted their children got into RMIB and Blair CAP, how many Bs did they get? If they had all or almost all As, your responses wouldn't be helpful for OP.

Ok then what is it about? The committees have what in front of them? Grades, test scores, and the essay. If test scores are the same or better, you’re going to tell me it’s about the essay? My son is an excellent writer. Did he not have a sufficient sob story?

My kid had straight As throughout Eastern and got into CAP but not Blair stem with 280 MAPM. There were a bunch who got into Blair stem from Eastern, but I have no idea about their grades and scores. They were in the math club which I have to believe helped in their essay.

NP. I think it is about the Bs. They really don't have much else.

We know kids who got into CAP with some Bs but not sure which classes.

It may have been related to interest/yield. My kid applied to Blair magnet, Wheaton mag and Blair CAP coming from TPMS magnet several years ago. Had lots of performing arts accolades (state level awards) and good writer. Also, had perfect (or near perfect) verbal score for the assessment at the time. Excellent grades and teacher recs. But, wrote essay on something stem related. Did fine with stem magnets, rejected by CAP. At that time, it was 1 app for all programs (is it still?), so I think CAP people assumed kid would opt for stem based on the essay content.
My oldest applied in the days of separate apps for each program. She tailored essay and app components to each one and got in everywhere (both Blairs, both Wheatons, RMIB).
