Required paragraph for entry into APS lotteries

Why wouldn't they make kids do this for HB too?

I'm OP. The way it was explained during the Arlington Tech info session is it was basically a way to make sure the student had a general understanding of what the program is before applying. In its arrogance, everyone probably assumes HB is the crown jewel so of course everyone wants to go there no matter what it is exactly.

It’s a minimal requirement. Any old paragraph will do. I’m pretty sure it’s just to show interest. Will not impact whether you are entered into the lottery or selected. Just to show the kid has some interest and the parent didn’t just check the box on their behalf. Both my kids did them in 15 minutes for IB. Both got in.

So if it has no bearing on the lottery, what's the real point? Are they going to turn down, or call a student whose paragraph doesn't indicate an understanding of the program before letting them in? I don't see how they can require a statement that has no bearing on a straight lottery system.

The goal is probably just to weed out uninterested kids. These programs are important to those students who are truly interested, and spots are limited.

Because there are no specific requirements to get into HB. It’s a lottery. If a kid is at HB, basically, they won a lottery.

I wondered about this too. My (uninformed) guess is that the goal is to weed out the kids who aren't truly interested, and who would end up declining a spot if offered, by making them put a tiny bit of work in up front to get in the lottery.

I thought the Career Center was also a lottery.

It should really be a requirement at HB too.

I’m honestly surprised that APS would have any kind of barrier to applying. Surely there’s something inequitable about it.

Just the Arlington Tech program. Not the Career Center.

Right. Career Center classes can be taken by any APS high school student and transportation is provided to and from the base high school. Those classes are the equivalent of two periods.

Wow. There is nothing that APS parents won’t complain about. A paragraph? Really?!

If people had to write about HB, it would be an emperor has no clothes moment: private school paid by public money. That’s all you can write.

A completely pointless paragraph that literally no one looks at.
