It’s not free but the Baltimore zoo is way better than the DC zoo.
I would do 2 days in Baltimore and do the zoo and the science center. Science center has a fun playground outside now too.

This one is not a must see. It's more like a fun way to kill a rainy afternoon as a local.

You might want to check out the Climb Zone in Laurel. Highly decorated climbing walls. My kids and their out of town visitors love it.

I'd bring scooters for the kids to ride around the mall. Kids go so much farther on scooters without whining than they will on foot.

Yeah, I actually hate it except for the dinosaurs. I don’t like the taxidermy and somehow in the year of our lord 2024 there is a mummy tucked in there which is, well, dehumanizing. For some reason that museum just doesn’t move forward.

They have these all over the country though. Fwiw.

Climbing walls yes, but have you been to the Climb Zone? It's another level.

If you have a car, go to the Wizard of Oz park in Bowie. It’s magical! You’ll find good parks all around DC and MD.

American Indian museum has really good food.

The cafe is currently closed, though, and most of the exhibits are gone, too (at the Am Indian Mus).

Our kids loved the air and space museum as well as the lower level of the American history museum- the trains and cars exhibits were big hits. They also enjoyed seeing the White House.

4 and 6 year old grandkids enjoyed the Udvar-Hazy Center out near Dulles Airport-free admission, no tickets needed, pay for parking.
