Rome and a beach?

Sardinia! Fantastic beaches, soft sand, clear water.

It was also very crowded and the water wasn't that clean. I could see how it would be lovely in September, but I was really put off by the cost.

We had similar prices in Liguria, but there was also a free part of the beach directly next to the paid part, and plenty of people set up there with their own sun umbrellas, etc.

This is the same with Santa Marinella. The advantage is you can take the train even if you don’t have a car. It’s nothing fancy but that’s ok. We never rent beds, just use the public area. And EVERY beach in Italy will be crowded in the summer, lol. Italians love the beach.
OP, another option is going south to Puglia. We had some wonderful beach vacations there too at the resorts.

Sperlonga is really nice. It's about half way between Rome and Naples.

You don't go to Italy for the beaches too many other things to see and do, beaches are subpar

Speak for yourself. I love swimming in the Mediterranean. I don't care about sand. The rocky cliffs are the best swimming areas. The towns along the coastline have a vibe of their own.

Agreed- not a "spend a week at the beach type", but 4 days at an Italian beach, after or before touring a city like Rome, is right up my alley. Love how all the services/restaurants are right at the beach and you don't have lug your stuff all over the place.
