Wesleyan for a normie athletic male?

Anonymous
The 2024 we know, accepted ED, is a lax bro (though not recruited) who will absolutely be chasing girls. He's respectful so not a stereotypical DKE douche, but if's that's your standard, then Wes won't be a good fit anyway. My brother went to Wake Forest in the 80s and the DKEs were asshats there too so no one was surprised when the Wake finally closed the chapter.

Why not?

Because it would be helpful to know if there’s a reason the school appeals to him. Does he know anything about the place? Or did he throw a dart at a map and it landed in the middle of Connecticut?

Wes is not the first place I’d think of for a normie athletic male interested in finance. That doesn’t mean it couldn’t be a good fit, but knowing why it’s on the list would help me, at least, give a better answer. Is he being recruited for a sport? Is he looking for a LAC that’s not too small? Is he into the arts scene? Does he want to major in film?

It's a well regarded LAC with a strong econ department, at least historically and a lot of east coast people. It strikes me as sort of a slightly poor man's Williams or Amherst.

He will be playing lacrosse at Wes though not recruited, or he played in high school but won’t play for Wes?

With an $89k COA, Wes isn’t a poor man’s anything.

There’s three groups of equally strong artsy kids, athletes, and political activists at Wes. Big LGBTQ scene as well. He’ll probably find his own crowd somewhere.

I don’t know what you mean by normie, but if he wants less political/ LGBTQ scene, you should check out Colby, Middlebury, Hamilton, Colgate and Bates.

My DS who fits this bill (though he will be running XC/TF) liked Wes a lot, though honestly it didn’t feel like the right fit to me. It skewed very artsy/woke to me. I was surprised he liked it as much as he did. I preferred Hamilton, Conn, Midd, Bowdoin, and Haverford for him, of the schools we visited.

This. Nice kid.

If he's a masochist, sure.

Sure! Met a few kids that seemed to fit this description (don't know about their majors though) when mine was admitted 2 years ago.

If your kid is not artsy, is not a "political activist" (woke) type, is not LGBTQ, and is athletic but not a recruited athlete, then he may have considerable trouble "finding his own crowd" at Wes or at any other SLAC. These schools simply do not admit a lot of normal regular white guys.

If you're not on a team, sorry, those guys on the team will hang out with each other for obvious reasons, but they are not as likely to hang out with you. You're just not doing all the same things as them - training, practice, away games.

Sounds to me like Trinity would be a better fit, if he wants to go into finance. My DS was turned off by Trinity due to its Wall Street connections.

OP, I'm the poster who knows the lax bro. He's smart & UMC, like many of the kids at SLACs, but otherwise he's pretty much a regular white guy. But if your son can only be friends with other "regular white guys," then an SLAC probably won't be a good fit. These are small communities so he'll need to comfortable befriending and learning from the sporty, theater, lab rats, Anime, international, LGBTQ, small town etc kids. I would visit Wes if he isn't sure.

Such an ignorant comment from someone who clearly knows little about SLACs.

What a load of hooey. You clearly don't know Wes or other LACs and are just here to advance your stupid "anti-woke" agenda. So tired of this political poster.
